Chapter 7 - Going Dark

The fire alarms shrieked with a deafening, ear-piercing mechanical scream.

Thick white chemical foam and water sprayed violently from the ceiling sprinklers, instantly causing mass panic.

Doctors, patients, and police officers scrambled through the hallways in total confusion.

Cameron stripped off his expensive navy suit jacket and threw it over Hope’s head to keep her dry.

He grabbed a discarded paramedic uniform from a supply closet and quickly pulled it over his soaked shirt.

Miller led them toward the underground service tunnels used for medical waste disposal.

They moved quickly through the dark, damp corridors, completely avoiding the main exits.

Cameron carried Hope in his arms, feeling her small heart beating frantically against his chest.

They emerged into a rainy alleyway two blocks away from the hospital perimeter.

Miller had a discreet, unmarked sedan waiting by the dumpsters.

They climbed inside, the tires squealing as Miller sped away into the dark city streets.

Hope peaked out from under the heavy suit jacket, her face pale and terrified.

Cameron gently brushed the wet hair out of her eyes and promised her they were safe now.

Hope looked at him with an intensity that did not belong on a six-year-old’s face.

She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, crumpled piece of paper.

She whispered that her mother told her to give this to him only if the police tried to take him away.

Cameron unfolded the damp paper, squinting in the dim light of the streetlamps.

It was a handwritten list of bank account numbers directly linking Marcus to an international terrorist organization.
