Chapter 14 - Blood And Glass

The heavy oak doors of the executive suite suddenly exploded inward, showering the room in jagged splinters and thick clouds of dust. Three men dressed in tactical black armor stormed into the room, leveling suppressed automatic rifles directly at Cameron’s chest.
Cameron dove behind the massive marble kitchen island just as a hail of bullets shattered the floor-to-ceiling windows behind him, sending a cascade of broken glass raining down onto the streets of the city below. He drew his sidearm and returned fire blindly, the heavy tungsten rounds tearing through the drywall and forcing the attackers to seek cover.
Elena did not run. She calmly walked through the crossfire as if the bullets were nothing more than raindrops, retrieving a sleek black pistol from a hidden compartment under the sofa. She fired two precise shots at the marble island, pinning Cameron down. She loudly mocked him, stating that his father had been a weak man who built an empire he did not have the ruthless strength to protect, and Cameron was making the exact same mistakes.
Cameron checked his magazine. He had eight rounds left and was completely outgunned. His comms earpiece crackled to life with the sound of heavy gunfire in the background. Miller was shouting that the lower levels had been breached by a heavily armed mercenary team. The syndicate had not just come for the data; they had come to physically wipe the West family off the face of the earth.

Cameron took a deep breath, calculating the geometry of the room. He aimed his sidearm at the massive, ornate chandelier hanging directly above the tactical team. He fired twice, shattering the thick steel mounting bracket. The heavy crystal fixture plummeted from the ceiling, crashing onto the marble floor and crushing two of the mercenaries under hundreds of pounds of glass and brass.
The distraction gave Cameron the split second he needed. He vaulted over the kitchen island, sprinting toward the hallway door. The third mercenary raised his rifle, but Cameron fired a single round on the run, striking the man square in the chest plate and knocking him backward. Cameron burst into the hallway, slamming the door shut behind him, knowing the real war was waiting for him in the server room.
