Chapter 15 - The Descent

The pristine, brightly lit hallways of Cameron’s corporate headquarters were unrecognizable. The emergency lighting had kicked on, casting an eerie, pulsating crimson glow across the polished floors. Smoke alarms blared relentlessly as Cameron sprinted toward the emergency stairwell, his expensive shoes crunching over shattered glass and spent bullet casings.
He knew Elena would not pursue him immediately; her priority would be re-establishing the network connection he had ordered Miller to sever. If the syndicate managed to extract the experimental military patents, they would have the blueprints to manufacture untraceable, biological weapons on a global scale. Marcus had merely been a greedy middleman; this shadow organization wanted to become a global superpower.
Cameron threw open the heavy steel door to the stairwell and began his descent to the sub-basement levels. His muscles burned, and his breath came in ragged gasps, but the image of Hope's terrified face in that Vienna photograph fueled his adrenaline. The child was an innocent pawn trapped in a war of billionaires and assassins, and Cameron swore to himself that he would not let another life be destroyed by his father's legacy.
As he reached the thirtieth floor landing, the stairwell door violently swung open. A massive mercenary stepped through, swinging the butt of his rifle directly at Cameron’s face. Cameron ducked underneath the blow, hearing the heavy composite stock smash into the concrete wall behind him.

He drove his elbow upward, catching the mercenary under the chin with a sickening crunch. The man stumbled backward, but his sheer size allowed him to absorb the impact. The mercenary wrapped his massive hands around Cameron’s throat, slamming him aggressively against the metal railing of the stairs.
Cameron choked, spots of darkness dancing in his peripheral vision. He could feel the metal railing groaning under their combined weight. With his last ounce of strength, Cameron unclipped a heavy tactical flashlight from the mercenary’s own vest and slammed it brutally into the side of the man’s knee. The joint gave way with a loud pop. The man roared in pain, loosening his grip just enough for Cameron to twist his body, using his momentum to flip the massive attacker over the railing. The mercenary fell three stories down the open stairwell, landing with a heavy thud in the darkness below. Cameron slumped against the wall, gasping for oxygen, realizing that surviving the night would require him to become a monster.
