Chapter 12 - The Trojan Virus

Three agonizing days passed while Cameron played the role of the benevolent savior. He visited the hospital daily, bringing expensive toys for Hope and discussing transition plans with Elena, who played the part of the recovering victim flawlessly. Every smile they exchanged felt like a high-stakes game of chess where one wrong move meant instant death.
Late on a Thursday night, Cameron was sitting alone in his penthouse office when his encrypted laptop chimed with an incoming priority file from Miller. The security chief had finally bypassed a heavily encrypted server hosted in Eastern Europe. The file contained security footage from a train station in Vienna, dated three months prior.
Cameron hit play, his blood running cold. The silent footage showed Elena standing on a bustling platform, looking sharp, dangerous, and completely healthy. She was handing a small canvas backpack, the exact same backpack Cameron had searched at the hospital, to a tall, imposing man with silver hair. But that was not the worst part. Standing next to the silver-haired man, looking absolutely terrified, was a little girl in a red dress.
It was Hope.
Miller’s voice came through the secure audio channel, sounding grim and utterly exhausted. He explained that Hope was not Elena’s daughter. Her real name was Lily, and she was the daughter of a Romanian software engineer who had been murdered six months ago. The little girl had been abducted and systematically conditioned to act as a psychological prop, a tool designed specifically to manipulate Cameron’s known protective instincts.

Cameron felt physical nausea wash over him. He had placed his life, his company, and his heart on the line for a carefully constructed lie.
Suddenly, a red warning banner flashed across Cameron’s laptop screen, followed by a series of cascading system failures. His network was locking down. Miller shouted over the comms that they were experiencing a massive data breach from inside the building. Cameron stared at the screen in horror as he realized the truth. The flash drive Elena had given him at the hospital, the one he had plugged into his own secure tablet to view her whistleblower video, was never meant to expose Marcus. It was an elite, dormant virus waiting for Cameron to bring it behind his own corporate firewalls.
