Chapter 2 - The Girl With No Name

The heavy words hung in the sterile hospital air like a death sentence.
Cameron felt a sudden chill run down his spine as he looked at the innocent child clinging to his leg.
He instructed his private security detail to immediately lock down the entire VIP floor.
Nobody was allowed in or out without his direct and explicit authorization.
Cameron knelt down to Hope’s eye level, speaking in the gentlest voice he could muster.
He asked her if anyone had bumped into her mother or offered her a drink at the airport.
Hope shook her head, tears welling up in her large brown eyes once again.
She sobbed that a strange man in a grey coat had accidentally bumped into her mom near the escalators.
Cameron immediately texted his head of security to pull all surveillance footage from Terminal B.
He then asked Hope to tell him her mother’s full name so they could contact her relatives.
The little girl wiped her nose and said her mother’s name was Elena Vance.
Cameron relayed the name to his team, ordering a complete background check on the woman fighting for her life.
Ten minutes later, his lead investigator called back with a deeply troubling tone.
The investigator stated that he had run the name through every federal and state database available.
There were no tax records, no driver’s licenses, and no birth certificates.
The woman lying in the hospital bed did not legally exist.

Before Cameron could process this impossible information, his phone pinged with a new message.
It was an anonymous text containing a photograph of Cameron standing with Hope in the hospital lobby just minutes ago.
