Chapter 20 - The True Heir

The private airfield was completely dark, save for the navigation lights of a sleek, twin-engine jet idling on the tarmac. The rain was pouring down in heavy sheets, mirroring the storm that had started this entire nightmare just a week ago.
Cameron stopped the vehicle a hundred yards away, stepping out into the freezing rain with Miller’s backup weapon drawn. He moved silently across the wet asphalt, a shadow hunting in the dark.
Standing near the boarding stairs of the jet was Elena. She was holding a heavy umbrella in one hand and gripping Hope’s small wrist tightly in the other. The little girl was crying softly, her bright red dress soaked by the rain.
Cameron stepped into the halo of the runway lights, raising his weapon. He did not yell, he did not negotiate, and he did not hesitate. The naive billionaire who had tried to save a collapsing woman at the airport was dead, burned away in the ashes of his father’s sins.
He calmly told Elena that Silas was in federal custody, the data transfer was destroyed, and she had nowhere left to run. He ordered her to let the child go.
Elena pulled a pistol from her coat, aiming it directly at Cameron’s head. She sneered, telling him that pulling a trigger was harder than signing a check, and she didn't believe he had the stomach to kill a woman.
She was wrong.
Cameron fired a single, perfect shot. The bullet struck Elena’s shoulder, shattering her collarbone and spinning her violently to the ground. Her weapon clattered across the wet tarmac.

Hope screamed, covering her ears, but Cameron immediately dropped his gun and ran to her. He fell to his knees in the puddles, pulling the trembling child into his arms and shielding her from the sight of the bleeding operative. He whispered that she was safe now, and that the monsters were finally gone.
Months later, Cameron stood on the balcony of a new, highly secure estate overlooking the ocean. Hope, whose real name was Lily, was inside, playing happily with a tutor. Cameron had legally adopted her, ensuring she would never be a pawn in anyone’s game again. He looked down at his own wrist, where a faint scar from Silas’s knife remained. The company was gone, but the immense wealth remained. Cameron realized his father had hidden from the syndicate, but he would not. He picked up his phone and called Miller, who was fully recovered. It was time to hunt the rest of the serpents down.
