Chapter 16 - The Architect

Cameron finally reached the sub-basement data center, a sprawling, freezing-cold room filled with towering rows of black server racks humming with immense electrical power. The heavy security vault doors had been blown off their hinges, filling the corridor with a thick layer of grey smoke and the sharp scent of explosive residue.
He stepped inside cautiously, his sidearm raised. The room was eerily quiet, save for the mechanical whirring of the cooling fans. In the center of the room, standing calmly in front of the main terminal, was a tall, impeccably dressed older man with striking silver hair. It was the man from the Vienna photograph.
The man did not turn around. He continued typing on the keyboard, his voice echoing smoothly across the cavernous room. He noted that Cameron had his father’s stubbornness, a trait that was both admirable and highly fatal.
Cameron kept his weapon leveled at the man’s back, demanding to know his name and where Hope was being kept.
The silver-haired man stopped typing and slowly turned around. His face was weathered, marked by decades of violence, but his eyes were a piercing, familiar shade of icy blue. He slowly unbuttoned the collar of his expensive dress shirt, revealing a sprawling, faded tattoo of a black serpent eating its own tail on his neck.

He introduced himself as Silas. He smiled a predator’s smile, looking at Cameron with a deeply unsettling sense of twisted affection. Silas revealed that the empire Cameron was fighting so hard to protect had not been built by his father's genius. It had been built using seed money stolen directly from the syndicate twenty-five years ago. Cameron's father had been the original traitor, a cartel accountant who ran away with the syndicate's fortune to play a legitimate businessman in America.
Silas chuckled, taking a step forward. He explained that killing Cameron’s father was not business; it was a matter of principle. But stealing the company back, destroying Cameron’s reputation, and using a little orphan girl to break his mind? That, Silas admitted, was purely for his own personal entertainment. He raised a remote detonator in his left hand, informing Cameron that Miller had been captured, and if Cameron pulled the trigger, his loyal head of security would die in a fiery explosion on the floor above them.
