Chapter 13 - The Interrogation

Cameron did not panic. The betrayal burned through his veins like acid, but it forged a cold, calculating rage in his mind. He ordered Miller to physically sever the main server cables on the lower floors, isolating the corporate network from the outside world before the virus could transmit his proprietary military patents.

He then checked the building’s internal tracking system. Elena had been discharged from the hospital that morning and was currently staying in the VIP executive suite on the forty-fifth floor, a luxury Cameron had generously provided. She thought she had won. She thought Cameron was still the naive, compassionate billionaire she had played for a fool.

Cameron walked over to his private armory cabinet, retrieved a heavy tungsten-steel sidearm, and chambered a round with a satisfying, metallic click. He concealed the weapon beneath his tailored suit jacket and took the private elevator down to the forty-fifth floor.

He knocked gently on the double doors of the executive suite. Elena opened it a moment later, wearing a plush white robe, a warm, welcoming smile plastered across her face. She invited him in, offering him a glass of expensive bourbon. Cameron accepted the glass, walking slowly into the center of the lavishly decorated living room.

He took a sip of the bourbon, looking her directly in the eyes, and casually asked how Vienna was this time of year.

Elena’s smile did not falter, but her eyes instantly hardened, transforming from warm chocolate brown to something resembling shattered obsidian. The innocent, traumatized mother vanished in the blink of an eye, replaced by a cold, highly trained operative. She slowly set her own glass down on the marble counter.

Cameron pulled the photograph of the train station from his pocket and tossed it onto the glass coffee table. He demanded to know where the little girl was being held, promising that if Hope had been harmed in any way, Elena would beg for the poison Marcus had given her at the airport.

Elena let out a dark, melodic laugh that sent a shiver down Cameron’s spine. She praised his intelligence but mocked his timing, casually checking a heavy gold watch on her wrist. She informed him that he was exactly three minutes too late to save his empire, and that the man who had killed his father was already in the building.
