Chapter 2 - In the Shadows

Harper pressed her hand over her mouth to muffle her breathing.

Victor’s body shielded hers in the cramped space beneath the desk.

He drew a silenced pistol from his shoulder holster, his eyes tracking the shadows moving across the floor.

Two men, armed and searching, were kicking open office doors.

Victor tapped Harper’s shoulder and pointed toward the breakroom, silently telling her to hide there.

She shook her head, refusing to leave him alone.

One of the assassins stepped into their aisle.

Victor lunged upward in a fluid, lethal motion.

He disarmed the man and snapped his neck before the assassin could make a sound.

But the noise of the scuffle alerted the second man.

A laser sight swept across the cubicle wall, aiming directly at Victor’s chest.

Before the shooter could pull the trigger, Harper hurled her heavy messenger bag over the partition.

The bag slammed into the man’s face, scattering heavy design books everywhere.

Victor fired a single shot, dropping the second threat instantly.

He turned to Harper, amazed she hadn't screamed.

She was staring at the dead man's wrist, her face pale.
