Chapter 13 - Neon Bloodshed

They sprinted down the exterior walkway of the motel as bullets chewed through the concrete walls behind them.

Harper kept her head down, her hand tightly gripping Victor's free hand.

Four men in tactical gear emerged from the stairwell, blocking their only path to the getaway car.

Arthur did not hesitate, sliding across the wet pavement and firing precisely into the knees of the first two attackers.

Victor let go of Harper just long enough to draw his blade, closing the distance with the remaining men in a lethal blur.

He parried a knife strike from a Cartel soldier and countered with a brutal strike to the throat.

Marcus stumbled along behind them, utterly useless and whimpering in fear.

"Keep moving!" Harper yelled at her father, shoving him toward the stairwell as Victor cleared the path.

They piled into the armored sedan, Arthur slamming the vehicle into reverse before the doors were even closed.

Tires squealed in protest as they tore out of the parking lot, instantly chased by two black SUVs.

"They are heavily armed, boss," Arthur warned, checking his rearview mirror as the pursuing vehicles gained speed.

Victor rolled down his window, leaning out into the desert wind with an assault rifle.

He aimed carefully, firing a three-round burst into the front tire of the leading SUV.

The massive vehicle lost control, flipping violently onto its side and creating a barricade of twisted metal.

The second SUV crashed directly into it in a spectacular ball of fire.

Victor pulled himself back inside, his face covered in soot and sweat.

He looked over at Harper, who was shaking but completely unhurt.

They had won the night, but the war had just begun.
