Chapter 1 - The Sealed Envelope

Elena stood perfectly still in the center of Damian Russo’s massive office.

The rain from last night had stopped, but the tension in the room was thick enough to choke on.

Damian sat behind his mahogany desk with his dark eyes locked onto her face.

He did not look like a man who had just washed dishes in his own kitchen.

He looked like the ruthless head of the Russo syndicate.

"Sit down, Miss Brooks," Damian ordered, his voice dangerously quiet.

Elena took the leather chair opposite him, keeping her posture flawless.

She looked at the thick, unmarked white envelope resting between them on the desk.

"Am I being terminated, Mr. Russo?" she asked evenly.

Damian leaned back in his chair and folded his hands.

"You violated three distinct protocols last night by interacting with my father without security clearance."

"I fed a hungry old man who was fighting a soup can," Elena corrected him without flinching.

A terrifyingly cold silence stretched between them for ten long seconds.

Then Damian slid the envelope across the polished wood toward her.

"Open it," he commanded.

Elena picked up the envelope, broke the wax seal, and pulled out a stack of legal documents.

It was not a termination letter.

It was a highly classified non-disclosure agreement and a new employment contract.

The salary listed at the bottom of the page was five times her current pay.

"My father ate breakfast this morning for the first time in three weeks," Damian stated.

"He asked for the girl who insults his garlic portions."

"I am officially reassigning you from my corporate office to this estate."

"You will manage his schedule, oversee his kitchen staff, and ensure he actually eats."

Elena stared at the massive number on the contract, her mind racing.

"This is a generous offer, sir," Elena said cautiously.

"But I am an executive secretary, not a nurse."

Damian leaned forward, placing his heavy hands flat on the desk.

"You are whatever I need you to be to keep my family breathing," he replied.

Elena nodded slowly and reached into her bag for a pen.

As she signed the final page, the heavy office doors suddenly burst open.

Grant Mercer, Damian’s head of security, rushed into the room with a pale, panicked face.

"Boss, we have a massive problem in the kitchen," Grant gasped.

"The private chef you fired this morning was just found dead in the walk-in freezer."

May you like

Damian stood up instantly, his hand instinctively reaching for the weapon inside his jacket.

"And whoever killed him," Grant added, his voice trembling, "left a punctured can of soup on the counter."
