Chapter 9 - The Federal Raid

The blinding glare of the tactical flashlights completely washed out the dark cellar.
Dozens of red laser sights danced across Damian, Salvatore, Lucia, and Elena.
"Drop your weapons and get on the ground!" the lead FBI agent shouted.
Lucia calmly placed her tactical knife on the dirt floor and raised her hands.
Damian kicked his pistol away, keeping his body positioned squarely between his father and the agents.
Elena slowly raised her hands, her mind racing to comprehend how the FBI had arrived so quickly.
Agents swarmed the room, violently forcing Damian to his knees and securing his wrists with heavy zip-ties.
They pulled Salvatore away, escorting the exhausted old man up the stairs toward the waiting ambulances.
"Damian Russo, you are under arrest for federal racketeering and murder," the lead agent declared.
Damian did not struggle as they hauled him to his feet.
He looked directly at Elena, his dark eyes communicating a silent command to stay calm.
An agent grabbed Elena’s arm, roughly turning her around to cuff her.
"Wait," a smooth, authoritative voice echoed from the tunnel entrance.
The agents parted to make way for a tall man in a tailored gray suit holding a leather briefcase.
It was Special Agent Vance, the director of the regional organized crime division.
Vance walked up to Elena and gently pushed the arresting agent's hand away.
"Release Miss Brooks," Vance ordered smoothly.
"She is a civilian employee under federal protection."
Damian frowned, struggling against his restraints as he glared at the director.
"What game are you playing, Vance?" Damian snarled.
Vance smiled, adjusting his expensive silk tie.
"No game, Damian," Vance replied confidently.
"We received an anonymous data dump an hour ago containing every ledger, bank account, and bribe Carlo Russo ever made."
"The evidence completely clears you of the warehouse sabotage and pins the entire criminal enterprise on your dead uncle."
Vance motioned for his agents to cut the zip-ties off Damian's wrists.
"You are a free man, Mr. Russo," Vance announced.
"But your mother is coming with us."
Agents immediately surrounded Lucia, placing heavy iron cuffs on her wrists.
"She is an international fugitive responsible for a decade of corporate terrorism," Vance explained.
Lucia did not fight them.
She looked at Damian, offering a small, almost imperceptible nod of approval.
"Take care of your father, Damian," Lucia said coldly as they marched her away.
Damian stood in the ruined cellar, rubbing his bruised wrists, completely stunned by the sudden turn of events.
The federal agents filed out, leaving Damian and Elena alone in the quiet wreckage.
Damian turned to his secretary, the woman who had saved his father, defused a fake bomb, and stood by his side through absolute hell.
"Thank you, Elena," Damian said softly, all the ruthless edge completely gone from his voice.
"You saved my family tonight."
Elena smiled warmly, the adrenaline finally fading from her system.
"It is my job to handle your problems, Mr. Russo," Elena replied.
They walked out of the cellar together, stepping into the cool, quiet night air.
