Chapter 1 - The Midnight Intrusion

Victor reached into his pocket and pulled out a pristine handkerchief.
He pressed it against the bloody cut on his cheek.
"A disagreement over logistics," he said, his voice completely flat.
Harper stared at him, her eyes wide behind her blue-light glasses.
"Your logistics meetings involve getting stabbed?" she asked.
"Sometimes."
She slowly stood up, pushing her rolling chair away from the desk.
She did not run, nor did she reach for the phone to call the police.
Instead, she walked over to a metal filing cabinet and pulled out a first-aid kit.
"Sit down before you bleed on the carpet," she ordered.
Victor blinked, momentarily stunned by her commanding tone.
He obeyed, lowering himself into her cheap office chair.
She cleaned the cut with rubbing alcohol, her hands surprisingly steady.
She smelled like rain and vanilla again.
Victor realized in that moment that she was entirely too dangerous to his carefully constructed walls.
He was about to tell her to go home when the elevator bell dinged softly in the distance.
Victor instantly grabbed her wrist and pulled her down under the desk.
Heavy, deliberate footsteps echoed across the dark carpet of the fourteenth floor.

"Find the boss," a gruff voice whispered in the shadows.
"And if the girl is here, kill her too."
