Chapter 14 - The Desert Safehouse

They drove for three hours into the desolate expanse of the Nevada desert.

Victor owned a heavily fortified bunker disguised as an abandoned mining facility miles from civilization.

Once inside, the heavy steel doors locked behind them with a reassuring, hydraulic hiss.

Harper finally let her guard down, collapsing onto a leather sofa in the center of the concrete room.

Marcus sat in the corner, staring at his hands in silence.

"You owe three million dollars to the worst people on earth," Harper said, her voice eerily calm as she stared at her father.

"I thought I could win it back, Harper," Marcus pleaded, tears streaming down his weathered face.

"I was on a streak, I swear."

Victor stepped between them, his towering presence demanding absolute silence.

"You sold your daughter's safety for a hand of blackjack," Victor stated coldly.

"You will stay in this bunker, and you will not speak unless spoken to."

Marcus shrunk back, terrified by the pure authority radiating from Victor.

Victor walked over to Harper, gently lifting her chin so she would look at him.

"I am sorry I brought this into your life," she whispered, a tear escaping her eye.

"You brought light into mine," Victor replied softly, wiping the tear away with his thumb.

"I have enough darkness in my past to handle this Cartel."

"I won't let them touch you, Harper."

Arthur interrupted the tender moment, holding up a glowing satellite phone.

"The leader of the Cartel wants a parley."
