Chapter 8 - Out of the Ashes

"Run!" I screamed at the absolute top of my lungs.

Vanessa and I sprinted desperately toward the heavy steel loading doors.

The deafening explosion violently ripped through the massive warehouse, turning the night sky completely orange.

The intense shockwave forcefully threw us out into the muddy, freezing parking lot.

I hit the ground incredibly hard, my ears ringing with a painful, high-pitched frequency.

I dragged Vanessa behind a rusted shipping container just as the warehouse roof completely collapsed in a fiery ruin.

We lay there gasping for air, fully realizing that Julian had orchestrated the entire explosive trap to finally kill us.

By the next evening, the local news enthusiastically reported that two unidentified women had tragically died in a horrific industrial fire.

Julian believed he had completely won the war.

He proudly hosted a massive, luxurious gala at the most expensive hotel in the city to publicly announce his new corporate venture.

He was officially planning to use my forged death certificate to legally claim my fifty-million-dollar trust fund.

I borrowed a stunning, backless crimson evening gown from Vanessa's hidden emergency stash.

I walked right past the clueless security guards and confidently entered the grand ballroom.

Julian was standing proudly on the main stage, holding a glass of expensive champagne.

I slowly walked down the center aisle, watching the absolute horror dawn on his incredibly pale face.

"You look like you just saw a ghost, Julian," I announced loudly, silencing the entire ballroom.

He dropped his champagne glass, shattering it completely on the polished wooden stage.

"Guards, arrest this crazy woman immediately!" he shrieked frantically.

I confidently pulled a small, silver pistol from my thigh holster and aimed it directly at his head.

Julian suddenly stopped panicking and began to laugh with a deeply terrifying, maniacal glee.

"You are entirely too late, my sweet wife," he chuckled darkly.

"Look down at your beautiful chest," he commanded with a wicked smile.

I glanced down and saw a bright, glowing red sniper laser resting perfectly over my heart.
