Chapter 11 - The Golden Mark

I stared at the heavy solid gold coin resting in the palm of my hand.
The intricate engravings on the metal felt remarkably cold against my skin.
One side depicted a terrifying, highly detailed mythical kraken dragging a ship into the abyss, while the other bore a Latin inscription that translated to "Absolute Control."
Vanessa walked onto the sunlit patio, carrying two steaming mugs of black coffee.
She took one look at the gold coin in my hand and immediately dropped both mugs.
The hot coffee shattered the expensive porcelain across the Italian tiles, but Vanessa did not even blink.
Her face drained of all color, her eyes wide with a horrific, deeply buried trauma.
She aggressively grabbed my wrist, pulling the coin closer to her trembling eyes to inspect the microscopic serial number etched into the rim.
She whispered that it was the official currency of the Obsidian Circle, a highly secretive, ruthless global syndicate that controlled world banks, entire governments, and international cartels.
My unknown biological father was not just a wealthy businessman; he was apparently one of the supreme architects of global organized crime.
Before I could even process this mind-shattering revelation, a deafening mechanical roar violently shattered the peaceful morning silence.
Two unmarked, heavily armored black helicopters suddenly ascended over the edge of my penthouse balcony.
The massive glass sliding doors completely shattered inward as heavy, concentrated machine-gun fire ripped mercilessly through the living room.
I dove aggressively across the patio, tackling Vanessa hard to the floor just as a hail of armor-piercing bullets shredded the patio furniture behind us.
We crawled desperately through the shattered glass, blood heavily dripping from dozens of tiny superficial cuts on our arms and faces.
Six heavily armed tactical operatives wearing completely black, unmarked body armor repelled quickly down from the helicopters.
They breached my ruined living room with terrifying, lethal military precision, their assault rifles equipped with glowing red laser sights.
I did not have my tactical gear, and my primary weapons locker was located on the opposite side of the bullet-riddled apartment.
I grabbed a thick shard of broken window glass, wrapping the base tightly with a decorative throw pillow cover to protect my bare hand.
The first operative rounded the kitchen island, his rifle raised and aimed directly at the hallway where we were hiding.
I lunged forward with explosive speed, driving the sharp glass violently into the soft, unprotected joint of his tactical armor beneath his shoulder.
He dropped his weapon with a muffled groan, and I immediately snatched the heavy assault rifle from his falling body.
I flipped the weapon to fully automatic and laid down a massive wave of suppressing fire, forcing the remaining five operatives to dive for cover.

Vanessa grabbed the fallen operative's sidearm, providing crucial, deadly accurate cover fire as we sprinted frantically toward the emergency stairwell.
My brand-new, multi-million-dollar penthouse was rapidly burning to the ground, and my real war had only just begun.
