Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

I froze entirely, keeping my hands visible as the gun pressed harder against my skull.
"Don't move a single muscle, Elena," the female voice whispered directly into my ear.
Julian stared at the woman standing behind me, his jaw dropping in pure, unadulterated shock.
"Vanessa?" Julian gasped, his hands trembling so violently he nearly dropped the knife.
"You are supposed to be dead!" he screamed hysterically.
The woman stepped out from behind me, keeping her weapon perfectly trained on Julian.
I recognized her instantly from old photographs; she was Julian’s former fiancée who had supposedly died in a tragic boating accident two years ago.
"You tried to drown me to collect my life insurance, Julian, but you always were incredibly sloppy," Vanessa stated coldly.
Vanessa had spent the last two years hiding in the shadows, gathering evidence to completely destroy him.
"Let the girl go, or I will gladly send the cartel your exact GPS coordinates," Vanessa threatened.
Julian panicked, roughly shoving my crying sister away from him.
Lily stumbled forward, and I immediately pulled her safely behind my back.
"This is not over, you crazy bitches!" Julian roared furiously.
He smashed the heavy glass window with a chair and completely disappeared onto the exterior fire escape.
I turned to Vanessa, keeping my guard up despite her saving my sister.
"Why did you reveal yourself tonight?" I asked suspiciously.
Vanessa lowered her gun and let out a long, exhausted sigh.
"Because Julian just hired a private military contractor to forcibly extract your fifty-million-dollar trust by tomorrow morning," she explained.
"We have to team up if we want to survive the next twenty-four hours," Vanessa offered, extending her hand.
I shook her hand firmly, knowing I needed all the help I could get.
"Where is he going right now?" I asked rapidly.
Vanessa pulled a small tracking device monitor from her pocket.

"He is heading to a remote shipping warehouse down by the docks," she replied.
"He has my younger brother held hostage there to ensure my permanent silence," Vanessa confessed with tears in her eyes.
