Chapter 5 - The Devil's Bargain

I stared at the monster who had raised me, my hands curling into tight, shaking fists at my sides.
My beautiful son was resting just ten feet away, but the room was entirely filled with lethal, heavily armed guards.
"Give me back my baby right now, or I swear I will burn this entire estate to the ground," I threatened fiercely.
Don Carlo laughed, a dry, cruel sound that completely lacked any genuine human warmth.
"You have finally found your true spine, Serena, which means you are finally ready to rule this family," my father praised.
He stood up slowly and pulled a heavy, silver handgun from his desk drawer.
He slid the loaded weapon across the polished wood until it stopped right in front of me.
"Lucian is arriving here in exactly ten minutes because I told him I was holding you hostage," Don Carlo revealed.
My heart skipped a violent beat, realizing my husband was walking blindly into a massive, deadly trap.
"Pick up the gun, Serena, and execute the man who betrayed you," my father ordered coldly.
"If you kill Lucian and take back the syndicate for our bloodline, I will gladly hand you your son."
I looked at the silver weapon, my mind racing with a million desperate, terrifying thoughts.
Before I could make a decision, the heavy oak doors of the study burst violently open.
Lucian stormed into the room, his expensive suit covered in dark blood and his eyes wild with absolute panic.
He completely dropped his own weapons the exact moment he saw me standing there unharmed.
"Serena, thank God you are safe," Lucian breathed, stepping desperately toward me.
I quickly snatched the silver gun from the desk and aimed it directly at my husband's chest.
Lucian stopped instantly, looking at the lethal weapon with an expression of profound, heartbreaking sorrow.
"Bianca told me everything, Lucian, she told me about your arranged marriage and your massive betrayal," I cried out.
Lucian shook his head frantically, his dark eyes pleading with me to listen to the absolute truth.
"Bianca is a liar, Serena, she set up those photos to completely destroy our marriage," he explained desperately.
"I went to Sicily to secretly negotiate my permanent exit from the mafia so we could finally live in peace."

My father suddenly grew impatient, raising his hand to signal his armed guards.
"She is entirely too weak to pull the trigger, so shoot them both and keep the child," Don Carlo commanded ruthlessly.
