Chapter 13 - The Canadian Fortress

We drove relentlessly for twelve exhausting hours, navigating treacherous, snow-covered mountain roads deep into the absolute wilderness of Quebec.
The dense, towering pine trees completely swallowed the black SUV, entirely isolating us from the rest of the civilized world.
Lucian finally pulled the heavy vehicle down a nearly invisible, heavily overgrown dirt path that led directly into a massive, jagged rock formation.
He pressed a specialized, encrypted remote control, and a massive section of the solid rock wall slowly groaned open, revealing a hidden, subterranean concrete garage.
We drove inside, and the heavy rock door slammed violently shut behind us, completely sealing the impenetrable fortress.
The safe house was a massive, state-of-the-art underground bunker, fully equipped with independent power generators, advanced communication arrays, and a heavily stocked armory.
"My grandfather secretly built this compound during the height of the syndicate wars, and absolutely no one alive knows its exact location," Lucian assured me as he locked the heavy steel blast doors.
I laid a completely exhausted Nico down in a warm, comfortable bed, finally allowing myself to take a deep, shaky breath.
We were entirely safe for the moment, but we were also completely trapped inside a concrete cage, cut off from the rest of the world.
Lucian immediately walked into the main tactical command center, booting up a massive, glowing grid of encrypted surveillance monitors.
He aggressively typed a rapid series of complex codes into the central terminal, desperately trying to breach the FBI’s secure database to investigate the fabricated evidence against him.
"This data dump is incredibly sophisticated, Serena," Lucian muttered, his brow deeply furrowed in absolute concentration.
"It perfectly mirrors the exact encryption protocols used by my former syndicate accountants."
I walked slowly into the command center, wrapping my arms tightly around myself to ward off the freezing chill of the underground bunker.
"Who possessed the technical capability to forge that specific level of detailed evidence, Lucian?" I asked quietly.
Lucian stared at the glowing monitor, his dark eyes widening slightly in sudden, absolute realization.
"There was only one person in the entire organization who had complete, unrestricted access to the master ledgers and the technical skill to fabricate this data," Lucian stated coldly.
"But he was supposedly murdered by a rival cartel in Mexico over three years ago."
My heart skipped a violent beat as the terrifying implication washed completely over me.
"Who are you talking about, Lucian?" I demanded, my voice trembling with sudden, intense fear.
Lucian turned slowly to face me, an expression of profound, unadulterated anger entirely consuming his handsome face.
"My younger brother, Julian," Lucian revealed grimly.
"If Julian is actually alive and actively working for your father, we are fighting a ghost who knows exactly how I think, exactly how I operate, and exactly where I hide."

Before I could even fully process the shocking revelation, the massive, heavily reinforced steel blast doors of the bunker violently shuddered with a deafening, explosive impact.
Someone had not only completely found the hidden fortress, but they were actively blasting their way directly through the solid rock.
