Chapter 10 - The New Beginning
Lucian barely survived the massive, incredibly complicated surgery, but his formidable strength ultimately pulled him through the darkness.
He spent four long weeks recovering in a highly secure, heavily guarded federal medical facility.
During that time, the FBI systematically arrested hundreds of corrupt mobsters, officially ending the reign of both rival syndicates.
My father and Marco were permanently sentenced to life in a maximum-security prison without the absolute possibility of parole.
In exchange for his invaluable cooperation, Lucian was granted full federal immunity and a completely clean slate.
We were officially relocated to a beautiful, incredibly quiet coastal town in Maine under the strict witness protection program.
The heavy, suffocating shadows of our violent past were completely replaced by the bright, warm sunshine of our new life.
Lucian transformed entirely into the devoted, incredibly loving father and husband I had always desperately hoped he could be.
He spent his days building sandcastles with Nico on the beach and completely dedicating his entire heart to our family.
The painful, agonizing memories of the hospital and the massive betrayal finally faded away into absolute nothingness.
We were completely safe, unconditionally loved, and absolutely free from the terrifying mafia life forever.
Exactly two years after our chaotic escape, we celebrated Nico's second birthday with a quiet, beautiful picnic in our backyard.
After Lucian put our exhausted son to sleep, I walked out to the end of our long, secluded gravel driveway to check the mail.
I opened the old metal mailbox and found a single, elegant black envelope sitting inside with absolutely no return address or postage stamp.
My hands trembled violently as I tore the thick paper open and pulled out a crisp, recent photograph of Nico playing in our private backyard.

On the back of the terrifying photograph, a single sentence was written in an elegant, unmistakable handwriting.
"Blood always remembers, Serena, and your father still has incredibly powerful friends on the outside."
