Chapter 18 - The Ghost Protocol

Lucian’s hand trembled slightly on the throttle, the sheer weight of his impending, permanent imprisonment crushing his formidable spirit.

He was entirely willing to sacrifice his absolute freedom to ensure Nico and I did not die in a violent, fiery explosion on the freezing lake.

Before he could pull the heavy lever back to kill the engines, a highly encrypted, heavily distorted voice suddenly crackled aggressively through the plane’s radio.

"Keep your engines running, Mr. Moretti. You are officially cleared for immediate takeoff," the voice commanded with absolute, undeniable authority.

Lucian froze, entirely bewildered, staring blankly at the glowing radio console as if it were completely possessed by a ghost.

"Who is this, and how are you broadcasting on a highly classified federal tactical frequency?" Lucian demanded fiercely.

"I am the Director of Clandestine Operations for the CIA, and you are currently heavily protected under absolute, top-tier national security," the voice explained smoothly.

I stared at the radio in profound, unadulterated shock as the impossible, entirely miraculous rescue unfolded rapidly before our eyes.

The three heavily armed FBI tactical helicopters suddenly, aggressively broke formation, violently banking away from our small plane and hovering entirely uselessly in the distance.

The CIA had officially, aggressively completely overridden the FBI’s jurisdiction, entirely freezing their violent assault through massive bureaucratic power.

"Julian’s fabricated data dump was incredibly sophisticated, but my intelligence analysts completely debunked his digital forgery three hours ago," the Director continued.

"We absolutely know you did not murder those undercover agents, Lucian, and we fully recognize the invaluable, massive intelligence you provided to destroy the syndicates."

The immense, crushing weight of the false murder charges was instantly, completely lifted from our shoulders.

"Why are you actively protecting us now?" Lucian asked, his voice entirely steady but laced with intense, completely justified suspicion.

"Because the remaining international cartels are currently entirely destabilized, and we need you to completely disappear to ensure a massive power vacuum does not violently erupt," the Director stated coldly.

"You will absolutely fly this plane to the provided encrypted coordinates, where you will be permanently relocated outside the jurisdiction of the United States."

Lucian did not hesitate for a single, fleeting microsecond.

He violently pushed the heavy throttle entirely forward, the powerful twin engines roaring aggressively as the sleek plane accelerated rapidly across the freezing, glass-like surface of the lake.

We lifted smoothly into the dark, stormy night sky, entirely leaving the heavily armed federal helicopters and the ruined bunker completely behind us.

I held Nico tightly against my chest, tears of pure, unadulterated relief streaming heavily down my exhausted face.

We had completely survived the most terrifying, absolutely brutal betrayal, and we were finally, permanently free from the relentless shadows of the mafia.

Lucian reached across the small cabin and gently squeezed my trembling hand, offering me a genuine, incredibly peaceful smile.

We flew completely silently through the night for several hours, following the highly classified coordinates directly over the vast, empty expanse of the dark ocean.

Just as the sun began to slowly rise, illuminating the breathtaking horizon with brilliant shades of orange and gold, a sudden, terrifying alarm violently shrieked through the cockpit.
