Chapter 11 - The Phantom Threat

The crisp photograph felt incredibly heavy in my trembling hands, completely shattering the fragile peace I had desperately clung to for two years.
I stared at the image of Nico playing in the lush green grass of our secluded backyard, my blood running entirely cold.
The angle of the photograph clearly indicated that the stalker had been standing exactly on the crest of the small hill overlooking our supposedly secure property.
Someone had completely bypassed the intense federal surveillance network surrounding our witness protection home without triggering a single, silent alarm.
I shoved the terrifying black envelope deep into the pocket of my jeans and sprinted aggressively back toward the house.
I burst through the front door, my heart hammering violently against my ribs as I scanned the quiet living room.
Lucian was casually sitting on the comfortable sofa, reading a hardcover book with a completely relaxed, peaceful expression on his handsome face.
The moment he saw my pale face and panicked, chaotic breathing, his entire demeanor instantly shifted back into absolute survival mode.
"Serena, what is absolutely wrong?" Lucian demanded, dropping the heavy book and crossing the room in three massive strides.
I pulled the photograph from my pocket and handed it to him, entirely unable to speak through the agonizing, suffocating lump in my throat.
Lucian’s jaw clenched so fiercely I thought his teeth might completely shatter as he read the chilling, handwritten threat on the back of the glossy paper.
"This is entirely impossible," Lucian growled, his dark eyes instantly scanning the heavily reinforced windows of our living room.
"Your father has been held in a completely isolated, subterranean cell for two years. He has absolutely zero contact with the outside world."
"Then who took this picture, Lucian?" I cried out, my voice breaking with sheer, unadulterated terror.
"Someone knows exactly where we are, and they are actively watching our son."
Lucian did not waste another second trying to rationalize the terrifying, impossible situation.
He immediately walked to the hidden biometric safe installed perfectly behind the living room bookshelf and pulled out a heavy, tactical satellite phone.
He dialed a highly encrypted, priority-one frequency directly to his primary FBI handler, Special Agent Vance.
"Vance, our location has been entirely compromised," Lucian stated with absolute, unyielding authority.
"I need an immediate, heavily armed extraction team at the Maine safe house in less than ten minutes."
The line crackled with heavy static for a long, agonizing moment before Vance finally responded.
"I am sorry, Mr. Moretti, but I cannot authorize a tactical extraction at this specific time," Vance replied coldly, his voice completely devoid of its usual professional warmth.
"Your witness protection status has been officially suspended pending a massive federal investigation."
Lucian’s face completely drained of color as the sheer magnitude of the betrayal washed over him.
"What exactly are you talking about, Vance?" Lucian demanded fiercely.
"We just received a highly classified, anonymous data dump explicitly proving that you murdered three undercover federal agents during your time as a syndicate boss," Vance explained smoothly.
May you like
"Federal marshals are currently en route to your location to arrest you for triple homicide, and you will absolutely not receive any further protection from the United States government."
The encrypted call abruptly disconnected, completely plunging the quiet living room into a heavy, terrifying silence.
