Chapter 2 - The Escape Plan

Marco kept his heavy weapon pointed squarely at my chest, his expression entirely unreadable in the dim elevator light.

I instinctively shielded my newborn son with my arms, fully prepared to take a bullet to protect his fragile life.

"Please, Marco, you know that Lucian abandoned us, just let us go," I pleaded, my voice trembling with desperate fear.

Marco stared at me in silence for three agonizing seconds before slowly lowering his gun to his side.

He reached past me and pressed the button for the underground parking garage.

"I am risking my own life doing this, but you saved my little sister from the syndicate three years ago, and I owe you a massive debt," Marco explained quietly.

He handed Elena a set of car keys attached to a small leather fob.

"There is an untraceable black sedan parked in spot forty-two, completely fueled and ready to go," he instructed.

I thanked him with tears welling in my eyes, realizing this hardened criminal possessed more honor than my own husband.

"Do not thank me yet, Serena, because Lucian has crossed lines this week that even the syndicate cannot stomach," Marco warned darkly.

The elevator doors opened into the damp, freezing air of the underground garage.

Elena and I sprinted toward the designated parking spot, finding the sleek black sedan waiting exactly where Marco promised.

We climbed inside, locking the heavy doors as Elena instantly fired up the powerful engine.

She drove us out into the torrential New York rain, navigating the slick city streets with reckless, desperate speed.

We drove for nearly two hours, heading deep into the secluded, wooded hills of upstate New York.

Elena finally pulled the car down a hidden gravel driveway, parking in front of an old, abandoned hunting cabin.

"This property belonged to our grandfather, and Lucian does not even know it exists," Elena assured me.

We hurried through the pouring rain and unlocked the heavy wooden front door.

I finally let out a massive sigh of relief, feeling incredibly grateful that my son was temporarily safe.

Elena flipped the old iron light switch on the wall.
