Chapter 15 - The Impossible Choice

The heavy, suffocating silence in the ruined command center was broken only by the chaotic crackle of the burning blast doors.

Julian’s terrifying, absolute ultimatum hung aggressively in the air, completely freezing the blood heavily in my veins as I watched helplessly from the panic room monitor.

He was entirely willing to slaughter his own brother and permanently entomb his innocent nephew in a mountain of solid rock just to reclaim a dead criminal empire.

Lucian stared deeply into Julian’s dark, hollow eyes, searching desperately for any remaining trace of the younger brother he had once loved and fiercely protected.

There was absolutely nothing left but pure, unadulterated greed and a completely ruthless, psychopathic ambition.

"If I transfer the money and end my life, you will absolutely kill Serena and Nico anyway just to eliminate any loose ends," Lucian stated with cold, unwavering logic.

Julian laughed smoothly, a dark, chilling sound that echoed harshly off the concrete walls.

"You have my absolute, unbreakable word as a Moretti that I will let them walk away completely unharmed," Julian promised flawlessly.

"But if you stubbornly refuse, you will all violently burn together in exactly five minutes."

Julian casually tapped his expensive watch, starting a terrifying, digital countdown timer that actively linked directly to the thermal explosives above their heads.

Lucian slowly lowered his heavy tactical pistols, completely recognizing the bitter, absolute necessity of his ultimate sacrifice to save his family.

He walked calmly over to the glowing central terminal, his massive hands resting heavily on the keyboard.

"Lucian, please do not do this!" I screamed hysterically at the small security monitor, desperately pounding my fists against the thick titanium walls of the panic room.

My husband could not hear my desperate, agonizing cries, but he paused for a brief, incredibly poignant second.

He looked directly up at the small security camera mounted in the corner of the room, his dark eyes filled with a profound, completely undeniable love.

He mouthed the words "I love you" silently to the camera before violently typing his highly classified, biometric authorization codes into the offshore banking portal.

Julian watched the screen eagerly as the massive, multi-billion dollar syndicate fortune successfully transferred entirely into his untraceable, private accounts.

"Excellent, brother. Now, be a good soldier and finish the job," Julian mocked cruelly, sliding a single, loaded handgun across the metal table toward Lucian.

Lucian stared at the heavy weapon, completely accepting his brutal, tragic fate in exchange for our absolute survival.

He slowly reached out and firmly grasped the cold steel grip of the gun, entirely prepared to pull the heavy trigger.

Suddenly, a deafening, high-pitched mechanical whine echoed violently through the entire bunker, completely overriding the active countdown timer.

A brilliant, blinding blue light flashed aggressively from the central terminal, instantly short-circuiting the entire tactical command center.

Julian shrieked in absolute, unfiltered shock as the metallic detonator in his hand sparked violently and completely died, entirely neutralizing the thermal explosives.

I had not been sitting completely helpless in the panic room; I had manually accessed the bunker’s archaic, analog override system hidden beneath the floorboards.
