Chapter 12 - The Betrayal

I stared at Lucian in absolute, unfiltered shock as the devastating reality of Vance's words completely registered in my mind.

"Lucian, did you actually kill undercover federal agents?" I asked quietly, my voice trembling with profound fear.

Lucian violently shook his head, his dark eyes completely wide with desperate, urgent sincerity.

"No, Serena, I swear on our son's life that I absolutely never touched a single federal agent," he promised fiercely.

"Someone has flawlessly fabricated a massive trail of digital evidence to completely destroy our immunity deal and force the FBI to abandon us."

My father’s terrifying warning in the black envelope suddenly made horrific, absolute sense.

Don Carlo had not sent a random hitman to attack us directly; he had used his powerful, corrupt political connections to entirely strip away our federal shield.

We were now completely exposed, universally hunted by both the federal government and the remnants of the vengeful mafia syndicates.

"We cannot stay here for another minute," Lucian declared, immediately moving to grab a heavy tactical duffel bag from the hall closet.

"The federal marshals will arrive heavily armed, and they will absolutely not ask any questions before they open fire."

I sprinted down the hallway to the nursery, my heart pounding violently as I quickly scooped a sleeping Nico securely into my arms.

I wrapped my precious son in a warm blanket, desperately trying not to wake him as I packed a small bag with essential baby supplies.

We met back in the living room, completely abandoning the beautiful, peaceful life we had meticulously built over the past two years.

Lucian led us out the back door, entirely avoiding the main driveway where the federal marshals would undoubtedly arrive.

We rushed silently through the dense, freezing woods behind our property, navigating the dark terrain with only the faint light of the moon.

"Where exactly are we going to go, Lucian?" I whispered frantically as we stumbled through the thick, wet underbrush.

"We cannot use our bank accounts, we cannot use our real names, and we have absolutely no allies left."

Lucian did not stop moving, his massive body effortlessly breaking a path through the dense, unyielding forest.

"I have exactly one heavily fortified, off-the-grid safe house that I never officially disclosed to the FBI," Lucian revealed grimly.

"It is located deep in the Canadian wilderness, completely isolated from any major roads or communication networks."

We hiked relentlessly for three agonizing hours until we reached a small, forgotten logging road bordering the vast national forest.

Lucian had a heavily armored, untraceable black SUV permanently stashed inside an abandoned, rusted maintenance garage.

He quickly hotwired the massive engine, and we drove aggressively into the dark, desolate night, entirely leaving our fragile, beautiful peace permanently behind.

As we crossed the dark, completely unguarded border into Canada, a terrifying realization suddenly dawned on me.

If my father had the immense power to successfully manipulate the FBI from inside a maximum-security prison cell, he absolutely knew about Lucian’s secret safe house.
