Chapter 7 - The Speech

I firmly grasped the polished edges of the podium and looked out at the vast sea of faces.

The thunderous applause slowly faded into a deeply respectful, highly anticipatory silence.

"Four years ago, I was told by those closest to me that I was absolutely nothing," I spoke, my voice echoing with steady authority.

"I was told I should step aside, lower my expectations, and let others have their moment."

In the back row, Thomas shrank down in his hard folding seat as the wealthy people around him listened intently.

"I lived in a toxic environment designed specifically to crush my spirit and exploit my daily labor," I continued bravely.

"But extreme pressure does not always destroy the things it tries to crush."

"Sometimes, relentless pressure is exactly what it takes to forge an unbreakable diamond."

The crowd erupted into spontaneous, wildly enthusiastic cheers at my words.

Haley lifted her phone, frantically trying to start a live stream to capitalize on my viral, cinematic moment.

"Hey guys, that is my amazing sister up there!" she whispered into her camera, faking a proud, tearful smile.

I spoke for ten brilliant minutes, detailing the struggle and the complex science behind my new surgical device.

With every articulate word I spoke, I cemented my permanent status as a rising titan in the medical field.

I concluded my speech to a massive, roaring standing ovation that shook the building.

I turned to walk back to my seat, feeling a massive, suffocating weight lift off my chest forever.

But before I could sit down, Dean Bradley stepped back to the center microphone.

"Before we conclude this wonderful ceremony, we have a very special, long-standing tradition," the Dean announced.

"We always invite the family of the Valedictorian to the stage for the official grant pinning ceremony."

My heart skipped a terrified beat as the bright spotlights began sweeping over the massive audience.

I had completely forgotten about the traditional family pinning segment of the graduation.

From the absolute back of the room, Thomas shoved his way violently past the startled security guards.
