Chapter 17 - The Trap Springs

The terrifying realization washed over Evelyn and her corporate thugs simultaneously. The armed men immediately lowered their weapons, frantically raising their hands in surrender. They were highly paid mercenaries, but they were absolutely not willing to go down for a globally broadcasted federal crime against a prominent medical figure.

"Stand down! We are not involved in this!" the lead contractor yelled to the cameras, immediately backing away from Evelyn and dropping his rifle to the floor.

Evelyn realized she was completely abandoned. The sirens of SWAT vehicles began wailing loudly in the distance, rapidly approaching the clinic. Her entire life of luxury, manipulation, and murder was ending right here in this bright, sterile room.

In a sudden, desperate flash of pure insanity, Evelyn lunged at me. She pulled a small, concealed syringe from her designer jacket pocket. The needle was filled with the exact same clear, synthetic neurotoxin she had used to slowly execute my mother ten years ago.

She vaulted over the marble reception desk, screaming wildly, aiming the lethal needle directly at my neck.

But Evelyn was just a greedy salesperson; I was a highly trained surgeon who spent years operating in high-stress, life-or-death trauma wards. My reflexes were sharp, calculated, and completely unrelenting.

I sidestepped her frantic lunge effortlessly. As she stumbled past me, I grabbed her wrist with my left hand, twisting it violently backward until a loud, sickening pop echoed in the room. Evelyn shrieked in agonizing pain, dropping the syringe.

Before the lethal weapon could hit the floor, I caught it in my right hand. I pinned her against the heavy desk, my knee pressing firmly into her back, completely immobilizing her. I held the deadly syringe mere inches from her terrified, wide eyes.

"This is exactly what you did to her," I whispered directly into her ear, my voice colder than ice. "You stole her life for money. But I am not a murderer like you."

Instead of injecting her, I slammed the syringe needle perfectly into a sterile biohazard containment vial sitting on my desk, sealing the undeniable physical evidence of her preferred murder weapon forever.

The front doors were suddenly completely swarmed by heavily armored SWAT officers. They rushed the desk, violently pulling Evelyn off the floor and slamming heavy steel cuffs onto her wrists. She kicked and screamed, completely losing her mind as they dragged her out of my clinic and into the back of a police cruiser.

I stood in the center of my clinic, completely unharmed, as the red and blue lights washed over the walls.
