Chapter 12 - The Jailhouse Confession

The very next morning, I canceled all of my immediate celebratory meetings. I dressed in a sharp, tailored black suit, grabbed my secure briefcase, and drove directly to the federal detention center where Thomas was currently being held without bail.
The sterile, unforgivingly cold visitor's room matched the absolute zero temperature of my heart. I sat in the hard metal chair, waiting behind the thick, bulletproof glass. The heavy steel door on the other side buzzed open, and Thomas was roughly escorted into the booth by a large guard. He was wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, looking ten years older and completely stripped of his arrogant, wealthy superiority.
He picked up the phone on his side of the glass, his hands trembling violently. He looked at me with pathetic, desperate eyes, expecting me to offer him a highly paid legal defense.
I didn't waste a single second with pleasantries or greetings. I pulled the highlighted toxicology report from my briefcase and pressed the damning paper directly against the thick glass for him to read.
Thomas’s eyes darted across the highlighted chemical names, and his face instantly drained of all remaining color. He dropped the phone, his hands flying to his mouth in sheer, unadulterated panic. I tapped the glass aggressively until he picked the receiver back up.
"You have exactly one minute to tell me the absolute truth, or I will hand this over to the FBI and ensure you get the death penalty for premeditated murder," I stated, my voice echoing with terrifying authority.
Thomas broke down completely, sobbing like a terrified child. "It was Evelyn! She told me it was just a strong sedative! She said if we put Elise in a coma, I could take control of her trust fund to save my failing business!"
He confessed to the entire horrifying conspiracy in a frantic, desperate rush of words. Evelyn had supplied the toxic compound, promising Thomas they would be incredibly wealthy and completely free of my mother's shadow. But once Elise was dead, Evelyn used the murder to blackmail Thomas into marrying her, completely trapping him in a web of his own greed.
"Evelyn is a monster, Clara," Thomas wept, pressing his forehead against the cold glass. "She doesn't just want money. She works for a massive corporate syndicate called Apex Pharmaceuticals. They steal independent patents and bury cures to keep people dependent on their expensive treatments. Now that you are in the spotlight, Evelyn is going to destroy you to get your mother's foundational research."

I looked at the pathetic, broken man who had abused me for years. I felt absolutely nothing for him.
"Enjoy your cage, Thomas," I said coldly, hanging up the phone and leaving him screaming my name in the silent room.
