Chapter 18 - The Aftermath of Betrayal

The subsequent weeks were an absolute, highly publicized media frenzy. The physical evidence I provided, combined with the digital live streams and the recovered hard drive, triggered a massive, unyielding federal investigation into Apex Pharmaceuticals.
The CEO and several top executives were indicted on massive racketeering, corporate espionage, and conspiracy to commit murder charges. Apex’s stock completely plummeted, bankrupting the corrupt syndicate overnight.
Evelyn was denied bail and placed in maximum security, facing life in prison without the possibility of parole. She completely turned on Thomas in an attempt to reduce her sentence, thoroughly destroying whatever pathetic shreds of loyalty they had left.
One rainy Tuesday afternoon, I was walking out of my clinic when I saw a pathetic, drenched figure standing near my car. It was Haley.
She was wearing cheap, unbranded clothing, looking absolutely exhausted and entirely stripped of her former glamorous arrogance. She held her hands out to me, tears streaming down her pale face.
"Clara, please," Haley begged, her voice shaking violently. "The bank seized all of my accounts because they were tied to the embezzled funds. I have absolutely nowhere to go. No one will hire me. Please, you have so much money now, you have to help your sister."
I stopped and looked at the girl who had mocked me, stolen my VIP ticket, and tried to destroy my reputation for internet clout. I felt absolutely no obligation to this stranger.
"You are not my sister, Haley," I replied calmly, my voice firm and uncompromising. "You spent your entire life stepping on my neck to elevate yourself. Now, you finally have to stand on your own two feet."
"But I don't know how to do anything!" she wailed desperately.

"Then I suggest you start applying for a job as a nurse's assistant," I said sharply, echoing the exact insult she and Thomas used to hurl at me. "It builds incredible character."
I unlocked my luxury car, got into the driver's seat, and drove away without looking back, leaving Haley entirely alone in the rain to face the brutal reality of the real world. I had finally, completely severed the toxic anchor that had dragged me down for years.
