Chapter 10 - The Final Diagnosis

I didn't flinch or step back as Thomas moved closer, waving the silver key mockingly in my face.

"You are going to sign half of that grant over to me right now, or I will drain her account tonight," he threatened darkly.

I slowly crossed my arms, looking at the pathetic man with nothing but pure, unadulterated pity.

"You are a little too late for that kind of blackmail, Thomas," I replied in a calm, measured tone.

His smug, victorious smile faltered as a pair of bright headlights suddenly illuminated the dark parking garage.

"I secretly hired a forensic accountant with my university stipend six months ago," I explained coolly.

"They found out you embezzled money from a federal charity just to fund Haley's lavish lifestyle."

The blinding headlights belonged to two unmarked police cruisers that silently boxed in his parked vehicle.

Four federal agents stepped out of the cars simultaneously, their silver badges gleaming in the dim light.

"Thomas Hensley, you are under arrest for federal extortion and grand larceny," the lead agent announced loudly.

Thomas dropped the silver key in absolute shock as the agents quickly forced him against the car and placed him in heavy handcuffs.

He screamed my name in total panic, begging for mercy, but I simply turned my back and got into my car.

I drove away into the beautiful night, leaving my toxic, abusive past behind in the rearview mirror forever.

That evening, I celebrated my massive victory in a private dining room with my true friends and esteemed mentors.

I had finally secured my future, my absolute freedom, and the foundation for my own medical clinic.

As the luxury restaurant began to empty out, a wealthy older man in a tailored suit approached my table.

He placed a thick, securely sealed Manila envelope right next to my crystal glass of champagne.

He didn't smile as he leaned down to whisper in my ear.

"Your father was hiding a lot more than just stolen money, Dr. Hensley."

"Open this when you are entirely alone, because your mother's tragic death was not a medical anomaly."
