Chapter 15 - The Digital War

I returned to the city completely exhausted but utterly triumphant. I brought the lockbox directly to Arthur's secure underground laboratory, far away from Evelyn’s corporate spies. Using a complex cipher my mother had taught me when I was a child, I successfully unlocked the heavy metal box.
Inside sat a pristine, military-grade encrypted hard drive and a handwritten journal. I opened the journal, tears finally welling in my eyes as I recognized my mother’s elegant, sweeping handwriting. She detailed her horrific realization that Evelyn was slowly poisoning her, and how she desperately hid the research to ensure Apex Pharmaceuticals could never profit from her impending death.
While Arthur began carefully extracting the data from the hard drive, my phone buzzed violently. It was a barrage of text messages from my university colleagues. Haley’s smear campaign had escalated into a highly orchestrated digital war. Evelyn had funneled massive amounts of Apex corporate money into bot farms, artificially boosting Haley's lies to national trending status.
Haley was currently hosting a massive live stream, crying to over a million viewers, demanding that the medical board completely revoke my five-million-dollar grant and launch a federal investigation into my "criminal behavior."
I smiled a cold, calculating smile. It was time to completely end my stepsister's toxic reign of terror.
I opened my laptop and connected with a highly skilled cybersecurity expert I had treated in the ER years ago. I owed him nothing, but he owed me his life. I sent him a single audio file that I had legally acquired from the federal wiretaps on Thomas’s jailhouse phone calls.
Ten minutes into Haley’s dramatic, tear-filled live broadcast, her screen violently glitched. Her perfectly filtered face was entirely replaced by a black screen displaying a stark white sound wave.
My stepmother’s voice, recorded during a frantic phone call to Thomas just hours prior, echoed perfectly into the homes of a million viewers.

"Of course I hired the PR firm for Haley, you idiot!" Evelyn’s voice shrieked on the recording. "We have to completely destroy Clara's reputation before she figures out I was the one who authorized the poison for Elise! I need that patent, and I don't care if Haley looks like a fool doing it!"
The live stream chat went completely silent for exactly three seconds before erupting into absolute, chaotic outrage. Haley stared at her monitor in sheer, unadulterated horror as her entire digital empire crumbled into dust in real-time. She had just broadcasted her own mother's murder confession to the entire world.
