Chapter 6 - The Guest of Honor

Dean Bradley stepped up to the grand wooden podium, adjusting the silver microphone.
The massive auditorium, filled with ten thousand eager guests, went completely and utterly silent.
"Today, we honor a student whose groundbreaking research will change the face of modern medicine," the Dean began.
"This incredible individual worked grueling twenty-two-hour shifts to completely fund her own education."
In the back row, Thomas rolled his eyes in annoyance and checked his expensive watch.
"Just give them the money already so Haley can start networking with the real elite," he muttered under his breath.
The Dean opened the leather-bound folder, looking out over the massive crowd with immense pride.
"She has already patented a revolutionary surgical device that will undoubtedly save millions of lives across the globe."
Haley suddenly stopped scrolling on her phone, a deep frown forming on her perfectly contoured face.
She vividly remembered breaking a strange mechanical device in our garage last year just out of spite.
Clara had spent hundreds of exhausting hours building it, and Haley had laughed cruelly when it shattered on the concrete.
"It is my absolute honor to introduce our Valedictorian, keynote speaker, and grant recipient," the Dean announced loudly.
"Please stand and show your respect for Dr. Clara Hensley!"
The crowd erupted into deafening applause as triumphant, soaring music filled the great hall.
Thomas dropped his expensive tablet, sending it crashing and shattering onto the hard concrete floor.
My stepmother gasped so loudly she began to physically choke on her own breath.
I stepped out from behind the heavy velvet curtain, instantly bathed in brilliant white spotlights.
My face was instantly projected onto the massive fifty-foot digital screens hanging above the stage.
I looked absolutely nothing like the exhausted, defeated girl they had verbally abused for years.
I stood tall and poised, radiating power, confidence, and undeniable, overwhelming success.

As I walked slowly to the podium, I locked eyes with the main camera, knowing exactly who was watching from the back row.
Thomas felt his knees go completely weak as he finally realized the horrifying magnitude of his mistake.
