Chapter 1 - The Golden Ticket

Returning home after a brutal twenty-two-hour shift, my stepmother's sharp voice immediately greeted me.

The smell of expensive perfume and burnt garlic hung heavily in the air of our massive kitchen.

"Clara, clean up those greasy plates," she demanded without turning around from the mirror.

"Haley has a photoshoot tomorrow, so don't ruin the aesthetic of the kitchen with your mess."

I looked at the pile of dishes they had left behind, feeling a deep ache in my bones.

My father, Thomas, sat at the mahogany dining table, sipping a glass of scotch.

He waved me away dismissively without even looking up from his glowing tablet.

Swallowing my exhaustion, I pulled a single, gold-embossed envelope from my worn medical scrub bag.

The heavy cardstock felt like the culmination of every tear and drop of sweat I had shed.

"Dad," I whispered, my voice raw and tired from back-to-back hospital rotations.

"My graduation is this Friday, and I have something important to share."

"I only got one VIP ticket, and I was really hoping you would come to support me."

Before I could even finish my sentence, he snatched the ticket from my trembling fingers.

He didn't even bother to look at the name printed on it before handing it straight to my stepsister.

Haley squealed in delight, immediately snapping a picture of the shiny gold pass for her social media.

"Don't be selfish, Clara," Thomas sneered, looking down his nose at me like I was garbage.

"You are just a low-level nurse's assistant, so you will be stuck in the back row anyway."

"Haley needs this VIP access to network with wealthy doctors for her emerging lifestyle brand."

"Let your sister have her moment in the spotlight for once."

I stood frozen in the middle of the living room as my heart completely shattered.

For four grueling years, I kept the truth locked away from my emotionally abusive family.

They had absolutely no idea what I had actually been doing at that prestigious university.

I watched Haley twirl around the room, flaunting the pass that I had earned with my own blood and tears.

I didn't argue, I just turned around and walked right back out the front door into the dark.

The cold night air hit my face as I tried to hold back my frustrated tears.

My phone suddenly buzzed in my pocket with a high-priority alert.

I pulled it out to see a text message from Dean Jonathan Bradley.

I opened the message and read the words on the brightly glowing screen.

The text made my blood run entirely cold and my stomach drop.
