Chapter 5 - The Back Row

Thomas instantly lost his arrogant posture, his face draining of all color.

He threw his hands up in a desperate, placating gesture to show he wasn't a threat.

"Officers, I assure you this is just a giant, unfortunate family misunderstanding," Thomas stammered nervously.

"My daughter Clara must have given us the wrong ticket by accident this morning."

The Event Director whispered something quietly to the police officers, pointing at his clipboard.

The officers nodded slowly and turned their stern gaze back to my terrified family.

"Since the main ceremony is starting right now, we will not arrest you for causing a scene," the officer said.

"However, you are being relocated to the overflow section under strict, continuous supervision."

Haley burst into loud, dramatic tears as a security guard firmly escorted them away from the plush VIP area.

They were marched all the way to the absolute back row of the massive auditorium.

Their new seats were cheap folding chairs located right next to the noisy air conditioning units and the public restrooms.

Meanwhile, I was standing comfortably backstage in a luxurious, private dressing room.

The faculty dressers helped me put on my custom velvet regalia and heavy gold honor cords.

I watched the entire lobby confrontation unfold clearly on the backstage security monitors.

A small, deeply satisfying smile crept across my face as I saw Haley forced into her terrible seat.

Dean Bradley walked into the room, holding a beautifully embossed leather-bound folder.

"You look absolutely incredible, Dr. Hensley," he said warmly, handing me a glass of water.

"The crowd out there is buzzing with anticipation for your highly publicized speech."

Out in the auditorium, the massive chandelier lights began to dim elegantly.

A booming, authoritative voice echoed perfectly through the massive surround-sound speakers.

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our Dean to announce this year's medical grant winner."

Thomas leaned over to his wife in the back row, his eyes filled with dark, greedy calculation.

"Forget the stupid ticket, we need to find out who this genius is," Thomas whispered urgently.

"I will force Clara to use her university connections to beg them for a high-paying job."
