Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

Haley shrieked at the top of her lungs as the two security officers blocked her path.

"You cannot do this to me, I am an influencer!" she yelled, holding up her phone to record them.

My stepmother frantically dialed my father's number, her manicured hands shaking with rage.

Thomas came sprinting back through the front doors, out of breath and thoroughly confused by what he had just seen outside.

"Get your hands off my daughter right this instant!" Thomas demanded, stepping between Haley and the guards.

"I am going to sue this entire university for everything it has!"

The loud commotion attracted the attention of the university's Event Director, who hurried over with a digital clipboard.

"What is the meaning of this massive disruption in my lobby?" the Director asked sharply.

Thomas puffed out his chest, trying to look as wealthy and intimidating as possible.

"Your incompetent security staff is accusing my daughter of stealing a ticket that I personally gave her."

The Director adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and looked down at the scanner screen.

His expression instantly shifted from annoyed customer service to deadly, unyielding seriousness.

"Sir, this ticket belongs to the recipient of our five-million-dollar federal medical grant."

Thomas laughed bitterly, shaking his head as if the Director had just told a hilarious joke.

"Clara is a lazy, ungrateful assistant who cleans bedpans, not some millionaire medical genius."

The Director crossed his arms and stared Thomas down with a look of absolute authority.

"Dr. Hensley is the most brilliant surgical mind this institution has seen in a decade, and you are holding her property."

Thomas opened his mouth to argue, but the arrogant words died silently in his throat.

He suddenly remembered the Dean calling me Dr. Hensley out in the pouring rain just ten minutes ago.

A cold, terrifying sweat broke out on the back of his neck as the pieces started falling into place.

Before Thomas could formulate a believable excuse, the heavy glass doors slid open again.

Two uniformed campus police officers walked into the lobby, their hands resting on their utility belts.

"We got a high-priority call about an attempted theft of federal grant property," the taller officer announced.

"Identify yourselves immediately, or you will be leaving this campus in handcuffs."
