Chapter 9 - The River

The tactical guard's finger tightened deliberately on the trigger.

I did not hesitate for a single microsecond.

I grabbed the hot barrel of the gun and shoved it violently upward.

The weapon fired loudly, blowing a massive hole straight through the roof of the SUV.

I punched the guard incredibly hard in his throat.

He gagged violently and dropped the heavy weapon onto the seat.

I instantly grabbed the gun and aimed it at the terrified driver.

I aggressively ordered him to unlock the back doors immediately.

The driver panicked and quickly pressed the central locking button.

The heavy armored doors clicked open with a loud clank.

I kicked my door wide open into the cold night.

I grabbed Grace and pulled her carefully out into the open air.

Vanessa scrambled out right behind us in sheer panic.

We were standing on an old steel suspension bridge stretching over a deep, incredibly fast-moving river.

The other heavily armed guards in the SUV behind Marcus's car started yelling aggressively.

Multiple doors slammed open in the dark.

Heavy footsteps charged rapidly toward us from both directions.

I knew we could never outrun them on foot.

I looked down at the dark, freezing water churning violently below us.

It was a massive, terrifying drop, but it was our absolutely only chance for survival.

I quickly handed the stolen gun to Vanessa.

I told her to run deep into the woods and hide until the police arrived.

She hesitated for a split second, then sprinted frantically into the darkness.

I picked Grace up tightly in my arms.

She wrapped her frail arms fiercely around my neck.

I told her to take the deepest breath of her life.

I climbed quickly onto the cold, wet steel railing of the bridge.

Multiple gunshots rang out rapidly.

Hot bullets pinged loudly against the metal directly near my feet.

I jumped into the endless void.

We fell quickly through the freezing night air.

We hit the icy water below with a violent, bone-crushing crash.

The incredibly powerful current instantly pulled us deep under the surface.

I kicked my legs furiously, holding Grace securely against my chest.

We finally broke the surface and gasped desperately for oxygen.

I let the powerful, rushing current carry us downstream, far away from the dangerous bridge.

We floated in the freezing dark for what felt like several hours.

The angry sounds of the shouting men finally faded away completely.

I exhausted the last of my strength to drag us onto a muddy riverbank.

We collapsed in the wet grass, entirely and totally exhausted.

Grace was shivering violently in the cold air.

I took off my soaked jacket and wrapped it tightly around her frail shoulders.

She looked up at me with beautiful tears in her eyes.

She smiled genuinely for the first time in four agonizing years.

She told me she always knew I would come back for her.

I passionately promised her I would absolutely never leave her again.

We rested in the freezing mud until the sun began to slowly rise.

I found an old farmhouse nearby and begged the owners to use their landline phone.

I immediately called my elite military security contacts.

I gave them Marcus's exact coordinates and estate location.

An hour later, heavily armed federal agents ruthlessly raided Marcus's massive estate.

They successfully found him frantically trying to destroy the digital evidence.

They also found something much more important safely sleeping in the nursery upstairs.
