Chapter 19 - The Return

The supply freighter limped heavily into a private, highly secured commercial dock just as the sun began to rise.
The violent storm had finally broken, leaving behind a crisp, beautiful, and completely clear morning sky.
I helped Jax off the ship and loaded him carefully into an awaiting armored medical transport.
My elite team had suffered multiple injuries, but every single man had survived the brutal assault.
I paid them incredibly well, ensuring they and their families would be completely set for life.
I climbed into the back of a black SUV and ordered the driver to take me directly back to the mountain bunker.
I leaned my exhausted head against the cool glass window, watching the city slowly wake up.
The adrenaline finally began to completely drain from my battered body.
My hands were covered in dark bruises and dried blood, but my soul felt lighter than it had in decades.
We drove deep into the silent, towering pine forests of the mountain range.
The heavy steel blast doors of the subterranean fortress groaned open to welcome me home.
I stepped out of the vehicle and walked slowly into the main living quarters.
Grace was sitting on the edge of the large couch, her hands clasped tightly together in agonizing anxiety.
When she saw me walk through the door, she let out a desperate, shattering sob of pure relief.
She sprinted across the room and threw her arms violently around my neck.
I buried my face in her soft hair, holding her so tightly I thought I might break her.
I whispered in her ear that the monster was completely gone and the nightmare was permanently dead.
Lily came running out of the bedroom, clutching a small stuffed bear tightly to her chest.
I dropped heavily onto my knees and pulled my beautiful daughter securely into my arms.
We sat on the floor of that underground bunker holding each other for a very long time.
I knew right then that I was entirely done with violence, security contracts, and the shadows of the past.
I wanted nothing more than to simply be a husband and a father for the rest of my life.
I told Grace to pack up the bags one final time.
We were not going back to the glass beach house or the massive mansion.
May you like
We were going to disappear entirely from the map and build a new, completely peaceful life where no one could ever find us.
Grace smiled radiantly through her happy tears and nodded in complete agreement.
