Chapter 8 - The Shadow Player

I stared at Marcus in absolute, unfiltered confusion.

He was supposed to be a simple hired actor working for David.

David looked completely terrified by the sudden arrival.

He lowered his heavy weapon instantly out of sheer fear.

David stammered wildly and told Marcus that he had everything completely under control.

Marcus did not even look in David's direction.

He kept his cold eyes locked entirely on me.

Marcus casually snapped his fingers in the air.

One of his tactical guards walked forward and brutally struck David in the back of the head with a rifle butt.

David collapsed instantly onto the hard highway asphalt.

Marcus politely apologized for the highly dramatic entrance.

He explained that David was indeed just a greedy, useful fool.

Marcus revealed that he was not an actor at all.

He was the actual mastermind behind the entire criminal operation from the very beginning.

He had expertly used my mother's boundless greed and David's blind ambition to orchestrate everything perfectly.

He had actively drained my accounts to secretly fund his massive, illegal political campaign.

I tightened my protective grip around Grace.

I demanded to know exactly where my daughter was right now.

Marcus smiled a cold, calculating, and terrifying smile.

He said my daughter was perfectly safe and sleeping at his highly secured private estate.

He had purposely kept her away from my mother because he knew she was violently insane.

Marcus offered me a very simple, non-negotiable deal.

He wanted me to legally sign over my entire overseas security company to him tonight.

If I did exactly that, he would give me my daughter back and let us walk away alive.

If I stubbornly refused, his men would shoot me dead and take Grace with them.

I looked at the four heavily armed tactical guards.

I did not have a weapon of any kind.

I was completely outgunned and physically outmatched.

Vanessa crawled out of the wreckage and started crying hysterically on the pavement.

She desperately begged me to just sign the papers and save them.

I looked down at Grace in my arms.

She was incredibly weak, but she nodded slowly with total determination.

She whispered that she just wanted our beautiful baby back.

I turned back to face Marcus directly.

I told him I fully accepted his terms.

Marcus laughed triumphantly into the cold night air.

He told his armed men to put us in the back of the armored SUV.

As I walked slowly toward the vehicle, I noticed something flashing brightly on Marcus's wrist.

It was an incredibly expensive, highly modified smartwatch.

I recognized the complex digital interface immediately.

It was synced perfectly to the exact same security system I used for my overseas servers.

I realized Marcus did not know I had built a hidden self-destruct protocol into the company network.

If I formally signed the papers, I could activate a virus that would wipe out all his stolen money instantly.

I just needed to get close enough to a computer terminal.

We all climbed carefully into the back of the SUV.

The heavy doors locked securely from the outside.

We drove silently into the dark, desolate countryside.

Suddenly, the tactical driver slammed violently on the brakes.

We were stopped dead in the middle of a massive steel bridge.

May you like

The driver turned around and aimed his gun directly at my face.

He coldly said Marcus had changed his mind about leaving any witnesses alive.
