Chapter 11 - The Phantom Caller

The photograph felt like a heavy block of ice in my trembling hands.
I stared blindly at the pristine white border, my mind violently rejecting the impossible reality.
My father had died in a tragic car accident when I was only ten years old.
I had personally stood in the freezing rain and watched his heavy wooden casket lowered into the earth.
But the handwriting on the note was undeniably his distinct, sweeping cursive.
I looked frantically around the empty driveway, my military instincts instantly scanning the tall sand dunes surrounding our property.
The angle of the photograph meant the stalker had been standing exactly on the crest of the eastern dune.
I crumpled the note into my pocket and sprinted across the warm sand, drawing the concealed tactical pistol I always carried.
I reached the top of the dune, my heart hammering violently against my ribs.
There was no one in sight, but the tall coastal grass had been flattened by heavy boots.
Resting perfectly in the center of the crushed grass was a sleek, black burner phone.
The moment I stepped closer, the phone began to ring loudly into the salty ocean breeze.
I picked it up, pressing the cold plastic to my ear without saying a single word.
A deep, chillingly calm voice echoed through the receiver.
"You have excellent situational awareness, my son," the voice stated smoothly.
My blood ran completely cold as I recognized the exact vocal cadence from my childhood memories.
I demanded to know how this sick, twisted trick was even possible.
My father chuckled darkly on the other end of the line.
He calmly explained that the car crash twenty years ago was a necessary illusion.
He had been deeply involved with a violent international cartel and needed to permanently erase his identity to protect himself.
He had ruthlessly abandoned his wife and child to build a massive, untraceable criminal empire from the shadows.
He told me he had been watching my progress for years with immense pride.
He had secretly funded Marcus and David, using them as brutal testing grounds to forge me into a hardened killer.
He said I had passed his ultimate test by surviving their betrayals and reclaiming my family.
I told him I wanted absolutely nothing to do with him or his blood-soaked empire.
My father sighed heavily, sounding genuinely disappointed.
"You do not have a choice in this matter anymore," he warned coldly.
May you like
"You are going to take over my global syndicate, or I will finish the job Marcus and David started."
The call instantly disconnected, leaving me standing alone in the deafening silence of the ocean wind.
