Chapter 4 - The Dark Room

I stayed perfectly still in the dark.
My senses sharpened as I evaluated the deadly situation.
I listened closely to the heavy footsteps echoing outside the thick oak door.
My mother started to scream in terror.
I clamped my hand tightly over her mouth.
I whispered a harsh, violent warning for her to stay completely quiet.
I released her face and moved silently toward the door.
I still had the tactical pistol firmly gripped in my right hand.
Vanessa was crying softly in the corner of the room.
Grace lay completely unconscious on the floor near my feet.
I could not see anything, but I knew the exact layout of my own house perfectly.
The brass doorknob slowly turned.
The intruder realized the door was securely locked from the inside.
A heavy, brutal kick slammed into the wood.
The door frame splintered loudly but managed to hold firm.
I raised my weapon and aimed at chest height.
I shouted clearly that I was armed and incredibly willing to shoot.
The kicking stopped instantly.
A familiar, chilling voice echoed from the dark hallway.
It was David.
He was my former business partner from my overseas contracting company.
We had built the entire multi-million dollar corporation together.
He was supposedly stationed in Dubai handling our biggest construction deal.
I demanded to know what he was doing inside my house.
David chuckled darkly through the wooden door.
He said he had simply come to collect his final payment.
He explained that my mother had come to him two years ago for help.
She had desperately asked for his expertise to hide my money from Grace.
David had gladly helped her set up the complex, untraceable fake accounts.
But David absolutely did not work for free.
He had eventually betrayed her and drained every single dollar for himself.
My mother shrieked in the darkness.
She yelled wildly that David had promised to leave her at least a million dollars.
David laughed again.
He called my mother a greedy, pathetic fool.
He revealed that he had hired the politician to fake the ransom video.
He was the true mastermind orchestrating this entire nightmare from the shadows.
I asked him what he wanted from me right now.
David said he needed my living biometric signature to unlock the final offshore vault.
He told me to open the door and completely surrender.
If I refused, he would happily burn the mansion to the ground with all of us trapped inside.
I suddenly smelled the undeniable, strong scent of gasoline seeping under the door crack.
He had already soaked the entire hallway in fuel.

Suddenly, the glass window behind me shattered violently inward.
A military-grade tear gas canister bounced across the floor and started hissing thick smoke.
