Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

The tearful reunion at the hospital was the single greatest moment of my entire life.
A smiling nurse carried a little girl with bright green eyes gently into the room.
Grace burst into happy tears and reached out her trembling arms.
Our beautiful daughter, Lily, hugged her mother incredibly tightly.
I wrapped my strong arms completely around both of them.
We finally had our family back together.
The local authorities informed me later that my mother had actually survived the fire and been arrested.
She had been caught desperately trying to sell her blackened jewelry to flee the country.
Vanessa had wisely turned herself in and officially agreed to testify against Marcus in federal court.
David was found dead in the crashed truck on the deserted highway.
Marcus was now facing a lifetime in a maximum-security federal prison for kidnapping and massive fraud.
My highly skilled security contacts had successfully activated the hidden virus on Marcus's servers.
The aggressive virus recovered every single stolen dollar and returned it securely to my offshore accounts.
Six wonderful, incredibly peaceful months passed quickly.
We bought a beautiful, massive new house right on the ocean coast.
Grace slowly and steadily regained all of her physical health.
Her beautiful hair grew back completely.
Her cheeks filled out, and her green eyes sparkled brightly once again.
She looked even more beautiful than the magical day I married her.
Lily was a happy, incredibly energetic child who loved playing in the warm sand.
I officially quit my dangerous overseas contracting job permanently.
I started a highly successful, local security consulting firm instead.
I wanted to be home every single night to have dinner with my amazing family.
We had finally found absolute, undeniable peace.
The long nightmare was completely over.
One sunny afternoon, I went out to check the wooden mailbox at the end of the driveway.
There was a thick manila envelope inside with absolutely no return address on it.
I opened it casually, entirely expecting routine business documents.
Inside was a perfectly clear, high-resolution photograph of Grace and Lily playing on our private beach from earlier that exact morning.
Attached to the photograph was a small, handwritten note.
The note simply read that my father was very proud of his beautiful granddaughter.

I stared at the paper in absolute, unfiltered horror.
My father had been dead for over twenty years.
