Chapter 7 - The Fake Cops

The concussive blast knocked the fake detective completely off his feet.
Thick white smoke poured into the dining room, blinding everyone in the house.
Emily screamed in panic as the mercenaries raised their weapons blindly into the smoke.
"Nobody move a muscle!" a booming voice echoed through a megaphone from the backyard.
Dozens of red laser sights cut through the smoke, locking onto the chests of the fake police officers.
These were not local cops or hired mercenaries.
These were heavily armored federal agents wearing tactical FBI jackets.
Grandma Margaret had not just called her estate attorneys when she suspected fraud.
She had called her personal contacts at the federal level to investigate the stolen funds.
"Drop your weapons immediately!" the lead FBI agent roared as his team stormed the kitchen.
The mercenaries quickly realized they were entirely outgunned and dropped their rifles to the floor.
The fake detective tried to crawl toward the shattered front door, but an agent slammed him to the ground.
Heavy steel handcuffs clicked rapidly around the wrists of Emily's hired thugs.
Emily backed into the corner of the room, shaking violently as her entire plan collapsed around her.
"This is completely illegal, you cannot do this!" Emily shrieked hysterically.
"Shut up and put your hands behind your back," a female agent commanded, grabbing Emily's wrists.
Patricia crawled out from under the dining table, her hands raised high in the air.
"I had nothing to do with the murder, I swear!" Patricia sobbed to the agents.
My mother, Denise, fell to her knees and pointed a shaking finger at Emily.
"Emily forced us to cover up the real estate fraud, she threatened to kill us too!" Denise cried out.
The FBI agents ignored their pathetic excuses and placed both women in handcuffs.
I stood in the center of the ruined entrance hall, holding Lily tightly as the smoke finally cleared.
Grandma Margaret walked over to me and wrapped her arms gently around my shaking shoulders.
"I am so sorry I didn't see their treachery sooner, Claire," Grandma whispered with genuine remorse.
"You saved our lives tonight," I cried into her expensive coat.
Richard and Clara, the two attorneys who had been waiting quietly in the corner, stepped forward.
"The federal agents have secured the perimeter, Margaret," Richard announced calmly.
"Good, now give Claire the envelope," Grandma ordered the lawyer.

Clara unzipped a hidden compartment in her briefcase and pulled out a thick, wax-sealed envelope.
"Evan left this with our legal firm exactly two days before his fatal accident," Clara explained gently.
