Chapter 1 - The Missing Fortune

The silence in the entrance hall felt thick enough to choke on.

My grandmother stood like a statue with her phone tightly gripped in her manicured hand.

Patricia looked like she was going to pass out right there on the polished hardwood floor.

My mother, Denise, tried to take a nervous step toward me.

"Claire, please let us explain this before the lawyers get here," my mother whispered.

I stepped backward immediately, shielding my sleeping baby from her reach.

"Explain how you watched me starve while you stole my money?" I asked her.

Uncle Robert looked back and forth between his wife and my mother with growing horror.

"Patricia, what exactly did you do?" Robert demanded in a booming voice.

Patricia burst into tears and covered her pale face with her shaking hands.

Before anyone could say another word, a sleek black car pulled aggressively into the driveway.

Headlights flashed through the large front windows of the Denver home.

Two figures in dark suits stepped out into the freezing rain.

Grandma Margaret walked to the front door and opened it before they could even knock.

Richard and Clara, her top estate attorneys, stepped into the foyer carrying heavy leather briefcases.

"We brought the expedited bank records you requested, Margaret," Richard said without greeting anyone else.

Clara unzipped her briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of highlighted financial documents.

"The $180,000 was successfully deposited three days after Evan passed away," Clara confirmed.

I felt my heart pound against my ribs like a trapped bird.

"But I never saw a single penny of that deposit," I told the lawyers firmly.

Richard looked at me with a deep expression of pity.

"That is because the money was not sent to your personal checking account, Claire," Richard explained.

Grandma Margaret snatched the documents from his hands and scanned the top page.

Her jaw tightened so hard I thought her teeth might shatter.

"The money was wired into a joint trust account created in Claire's name," Grandma read aloud.

"However, Claire was not the one who signed the documents to open this account," she continued.

I looked around the room, feeling completely betrayed by my own blood.

"Who forged my signature?" I asked, my voice trembling with anger.

Clara pointed a sharp finger directly at my mother.

"Your mother, Denise, opened the account and listed herself as the primary financial guardian," Clara revealed.

My own mother had intercepted my survival money while I was selling my furniture to buy baby formula.

Denise backed away toward the kitchen, her eyes darting around the room looking for an escape.

"I had to do it to protect the family!" Denise suddenly screamed.

"Protect the family from what?" Grandma Margaret yelled back.

Denise reached into her purse and pulled out a frighteningly large kitchen knife.
