Chapter 13 - The Prison Confession

Before we could fly to Geneva, I desperately needed to understand the exact scope of Evan's criminal network.

There was only one person who truly understood the depth of the betrayal that started this entire nightmare.

The next morning, I walked into the cold, sterile visitor room of the federal maximum-security prison in New York.

I sat down behind a thick pane of bulletproof glass and waited for the guards to bring her out.

Emily walked into the room wearing a bright orange jumpsuit, her expensive hair now dull and lifeless.

She picked up the heavy black telephone on the wall and stared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"Come to gloat about your billion-dollar fortune, Claire?" Emily sneered through the glass.

"Evan is alive, Emily," I told her plainly, completely ignoring her childish attitude.

Emily's jaw instantly dropped, her eyes widening in absolute, paralyzing shock.

She slammed her handcuffed fists against the glass table, completely forgetting she was being watched by armed guards.

"That is entirely impossible, my mechanic confirmed the brakes were completely severed!" she panicked.

"He played you, Emily. He used your pathetic assassination attempt to fake his death and run away with the tech money," I explained coldly.

Emily began to laugh, a hysterical, entirely unhinged sound that echoed through the concrete room.

"You think I am the villain, Claire? Your husband is the devil," Emily choked out between laughs.

She finally confessed the terrifying truth about the real estate fraud that started this entire chain of events.

Emily, Patricia, and Denise did not orchestrate the massive financial crime on their own.

Evan was the secret mastermind who had manipulated my mother and aunt into signing the illegal documents.

He had explicitly set them up to take the fall if the federal authorities ever started investigating.

When Emily discovered what he had done, she tried to kill him to protect herself and steal the money.

"He is coming for the trust, Claire, and he will absolutely kill you and that baby to get it," Emily warned me, her voice suddenly dead serious.

I hung up the heavy black phone and walked out of the federal prison with absolute clarity.

My mother and aunt were greedy fools, and Emily was a violent criminal, but Evan was a highly calculating monster.

I boarded Grandma Margaret's private jet waiting on the tarmac, absolutely ready to face my husband.

I was no longer playing defense against his psychological warfare.

I was going to Geneva to completely ruin his life.
