Chapter 17 - The Final Sentence

Three months after the dramatic arrest in Geneva, I sat in the front row of a federal courtroom in New York City.

The room was packed with aggressive reporters, completely captivated by the scandalous trial of the fake billionaire.

Evan was escorted into the courtroom wearing a bright orange prison jumpsuit, his wrists and ankles heavily shackled in chains.

He looked entirely pathetic, having lost a significant amount of weight and all of his arrogant swagger.

His highly expensive defense attorneys had completely abandoned him once they realized his offshore accounts were permanently frozen.

He was forced to use a public defender who looked entirely overwhelmed by the massive stack of federal evidence.

The audio recording from the Geneva bank was played loudly for the entire courtroom to hear.

The jury listened in absolute disgust as Evan gleefully bragged about manipulating his family and leaving his infant daughter to starve.

It took the jury less than two hours to completely convict him on every single charge.

He was found guilty of massive wire fraud, grand extortion, and faking his own death to defraud the federal government.

The stern federal judge ordered Evan to stand as she read the final, devastating sentence.

"Evan Davis, your actions display a level of calculated cruelty and absolute greed that is genuinely horrifying," the judge declared loudly.

She sentenced him to sixty-five years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, without any possibility of early parole.

Evan finally broke down, sobbing uncontrollably and aggressively begging the judge for mercy.

He turned around and desperately looked at me in the gallery, mouthing apologies and pleading for my help.

I looked at him with absolute, cold indifference, completely devoid of any pity or lingering affection.

I simply turned my head away and stood up, proudly walking out of the courtroom before the bailiffs even dragged him away.

In the hallway, Richard handed me a thick legal folder containing the final, expedited divorce papers.

"He signed them in his holding cell this morning. You have sole custody of Lily and absolute control of the trust," Richard confirmed.

I signed the final page with a gold pen, officially completely severing Evan from my life forever.

I walked out of the federal courthouse and stepped into the warm, bright afternoon sun.

Grandma Margaret was waiting for me in the back of her luxurious black town car.

"Are you ready to go home, Claire?" she asked with a soft, deeply comforting smile.

I nodded, stepping into the car and leaving the ghosts of my past permanently behind.
