Chapter 5 - The Dashcam Confession

The flashing red and blue lights illuminated the broken glass on the floor.
The two armed fixers froze, looking frantically out the shattered front windows.
"You said the police were paid off!" one of the men yelled at Emily.
Emily looked genuinely terrified for the first time all evening.
"I did pay them off, they are not supposed to be here!" Emily screamed in panic.
The fixers abandoned the zip-ties and ran toward the back door of the kitchen.
They disappeared into the dark alley, leaving Emily completely alone with us.
Uncle Robert ripped the zip-tie off his wrist and tackled his own daughter to the floor.
"You are going to prison for the rest of your miserable life!" Robert yelled, pinning Emily down.
The front door was kicked wide open by three heavily armed SWAT officers.
"Everybody on the ground right now!" the lead officer commanded with a booming voice.
We all dropped to our knees, raising our hands in the air to show we were unarmed.
I kept my arms securely wrapped around Lily, protecting her from the chaos.
An older detective in a tan trench coat walked into the house, stepping carefully over the broken glass.
He looked directly at me and pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
"Claire Whitmore, you are under arrest for the murder of your husband, Evan," the detective announced.
The entire room gasped in absolute shock.
"What are you talking about?" I cried out, completely bewildered.
"We found the missing $180,000 wired into a secret bank account under your name," the detective stated.
"We also found emails on your laptop hiring a mechanic to cut your husband's brake lines," he added.
Emily started laughing hysterically from the floor where her father had pinned her.
"I told you I tied up all the loose ends, Claire!" Emily gloated wickedly.
She had framed me perfectly for the murder she committed.
The detective grabbed my arm roughly and forced it behind my back.
"Wait just a minute, officer," Grandma Margaret demanded, stepping forcefully into his path.
"Step aside, ma'am, or I will arrest you for obstruction," the detective warned her.
Grandma Margaret did not move a single inch.
"You are not arresting my granddaughter based on forged digital evidence," Margaret stated coldly.
"The evidence is rock solid, lady," the detective sneered.
Uncle Robert suddenly stood up and reached into his jacket pocket.
"The evidence is fake, and I can prove it right now," Robert announced loudly.
He pulled out his smartphone and held it up for the detective to see.

"My car dashcam automatically uploads to a private cloud server every night," Robert explained.
"I just checked the footage from the night Evan died, and it recorded Emily paying the mechanic in cash," he revealed.
