Chapter 6 - The Setup

The detective stared at Uncle Robert's glowing phone screen with a completely blank expression.
Emily stopped laughing immediately, her face draining of all color.
"Show me the video right now," the detective ordered, holding his hand out.
Robert pressed play on the screen and handed the device to the officer.
The clear, high-definition video showed Emily handing a thick envelope of cash to a man in a dark hoodie.
The audio clearly recorded her saying the words, "Make sure Evan never makes it home tonight."
I felt a fresh wave of tears fall down my cheeks as I heard the final order for my husband's death.
"This proves Emily orchestrated the murder, not Claire," Robert stated firmly to the detective.
The detective watched the video in complete silence for a few painful seconds.
Then, he did something that made my blood run completely cold.
He dropped Uncle Robert's expensive smartphone onto the hardwood floor.
He raised his heavy black boot and crushed the screen into a hundred tiny pieces.
"Oops, clumsy me," the detective smiled, a sinister gleam in his eyes.
"What are you doing?" Robert yelled, shoving the detective backward.
The SWAT officers instantly raised their rifles and aimed them directly at Robert's chest.
"I am afraid that piece of evidence just became corrupted," the detective mocked cruelly.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick stack of hundred-dollar bills.
"Emily pays much better than the city police department," the corrupt detective laughed.
The men in the SWAT uniforms lowered their weapons and removed their heavy helmets.
They were not real police officers at all.
They were heavily armed mercenaries hired by Emily to finish the job her fixers had failed to complete.
"You really thought a few sirens would save you?" Emily smirked, standing up and brushing off her coat.
"I own these men, and I own this entire situation," she bragged confidently.
Grandma Margaret placed her hand gently on my shoulder to keep me steady.
"You are a very foolish little girl, Emily," Grandma said with absolute authority.
"You think your stolen money makes you powerful, but you have no idea who you are dealing with," Margaret warned.
Emily rolled her eyes and gestured for the fake detective to grab me.
"Take her outside and make it look like she resisted arrest," Emily ordered coldly.

The corrupt detective reached for my shoulder with a cruel grin on his face.
Suddenly, a deafening explosion shattered the heavy wooden back door in the kitchen.
