Chapter 11 - The Ghost of Paris

I stared at the handwritten note in absolute horror as the heavy mahogany walls of the library seemed to close in around me.
My husband, the man I had wept for and starved for, was entirely alive and living in European luxury.
I fell backward into a leather armchair, my trembling hands dropping the glossy photograph onto the expensive Persian rug.
Grandma Margaret walked into the library a moment later, holding two crystal glasses of iced tea.
She took one look at my completely pale face and immediately placed the glasses down on a side table.
She rushed to my side and picked up the photograph and the note from the floor.
Her sharp eyes scanned the chilling message, and I watched her maternal warmth instantly transform into a cold, terrifying fury.
Evan had not been a tragic victim of my family's treacherous greed.
He had manipulated Emily's assassination plot, using her hired mechanic as the perfect smokescreen to vanish without a trace.
He had eagerly allowed his own wife and infant daughter to suffer in freezing poverty while he cashed in a billion-dollar tech empire.
"Call Richard and Clara right now," Grandma Margaret ordered the butler, who was lingering in the hallway.
"Tell them to bring the federal task force director to the estate within the hour," she added with a voice like cracking ice.
I looked at her, my mind spinning with a thousand unanswered questions.
"Why would he do this to us?" I whispered, fresh tears of ultimate betrayal burning my eyes.
"Because he is a sociopath, Claire, and he played all of us for absolute fools," Margaret answered firmly.
She poured me a small glass of expensive bourbon from the bar cart and forced it into my shaking hand.
"Drink this and dry your tears, because we are going to war," she told me.
Within forty minutes, the Boston estate was completely locked down by armed private security contractors.
Richard and Clara arrived via helicopter, flanked by two serious-looking federal agents in dark suits.
We gathered in the massive dining room, spreading Evan's billion-dollar trust documents across the polished table.
Clara explained that since Evan had legally faked his own death, the massive software patents were currently floating in a legal gray area.
If he suddenly reappeared and claimed he fled under extreme duress to survive Emily's murder attempt, he could potentially reclaim everything.
"He wants the money back, and he wants to take Lily to secure his paternal rights," Richard warned gravely.

I felt a fierce, burning maternal rage entirely replace my shock and sorrow.
Evan had abandoned his child to starve in a freezing car, and he was absolutely never going to touch her again.
