Chapter 13 - The Amalfi Fortress

The villa was perched precariously on the edge of a massive cliff overlooking the Amalfi Coast.
It was heavily guarded by men carrying automatic weapons and wearing expensive, tailored suits.
Dominic parked the vehicle half a mile down the winding mountain road, completely hidden by the dense Mediterranean pines.
He pulled a pair of high-tech thermal binoculars from the trunk and scanned the perimeter of the sprawling estate.
He quietly noted that Arthur had hired elite ex-military mercenaries, completely different from the street thugs in New York.
Hannah stood beside him, the salty sea breeze whipping her hair wildly around her face.
She pointed to a narrow, crumbling stone path that led up the sheer cliff face toward the back terraces of the villa.
She recalled a vague childhood memory of her father obsessively studying blueprints of historical Italian fortresses.
He always believed that the most fortified structures left their most dangerous natural barriers unguarded.
Dominic looked at the treacherous drop, realizing that one wrong step meant plunging hundreds of feet into the jagged rocks below.
He looked at Hannah with profound respect, completely awed by her relentless determination.
They strapped their weapons tightly to their tactical gear and began the grueling, agonizing climb up the cliff face.
The sharp rocks tore at Hannah’s hands, leaving bloody streaks on the pale stone, but she refused to stop moving.
Her mind was entirely focused on the safety of Lily, Grace, and Emma waiting back in New York.
After nearly an hour of silent, exhausting climbing, Dominic hauled himself over the marble balustrade of the back terrace.
He immediately reached down, grabbing Hannah’s wrist and pulling her up to the safety of the wide balcony.
They crouched in the shadows of the massive stone pillars, the sound of classical music drifting from the open glass doors.
Inside the grand dining room, bathed in the warm glow of crystal chandeliers, sat Arthur.
He was casually sipping a glass of rare red wine, looking entirely relaxed and completely untouchable.
Hannah felt an explosive mixture of rage and profound heartbreak shatter the last of her childhood illusions.
Dominic raised his suppressed pistol, preparing to end the nightmare with a single, silent shot.

But before he could pull the trigger, Hannah gently pushed the barrel of his gun down.
She whispered that a bullet from the dark was far too easy for a man who had stolen her entire life.
