Chapter 8 - The Desperate Move

The Russian leader glared at us with pure, unadulterated hatred burning in his dark eyes.
"Drop the weapons right now, or the beautiful mistress dies instantly," he ordered viciously.
Chloe was sobbing uncontrollably, her pretty face completely pale and smeared heavily with dark makeup and tears.
Despite everything she had cruelly done to destroy my marriage, I felt a sharp, undeniable pang of sympathy for her.
She was ultimately just a foolish, greedy girl who had gotten caught terribly in Julian's deadly web of lies.
Agent Vance slowly lowered his empty pistol and defeatedly kicked it across the bloody kitchen floor.
I dropped my bloody knife instantly, raising my hands high in the air to show total compliance.
The armed thug smiled cruelly, his thick arm tightening maliciously around Chloe's fragile neck.
"Very smart," he mocked us darkly in his thick, menacing accent.
"Now, you will all walk upstairs slowly, and we will finally finish this unfortunate business."
He violently forced us to march ahead of him, the hot barrel of his rifle aimed directly at our exposed backs.
When we finally reached the destroyed bedroom, Julian was just regaining consciousness on the dirty floor.
He groaned pathetically, rubbing the massive, bloody lump forming on the side of his bruised head.
The leader shoved Chloe violently into the dark corner, keeping his lethal weapon trained carefully on all of us.
"Change of plans," the ruthless thug announced loudly to the terrified room.
"I am going to painfully kill all of you and burn this miserable house straight to the ground."
Julian began to weep loudly, begging shamelessly for mercy like a pathetic coward facing his end.
I slowly backed up toward Eleanor's bulky medical equipment sitting abandoned against the far wall.
"You cannot safely burn the house down," I said firmly, trying to strategically keep his attention focused entirely on me.
"The insurance policies are stored securely in a fireproof lockbox at the downtown bank."
The intruder laughed harshly, shaking his head at my apparent stupidity.
"I do not care about the insurance money anymore, little girl," he spat angrily.
"I only care about violently erasing all physical evidence of my men ever being here."
He raised his heavy rifle, aiming precisely at my chest to take the first fatal shot.
I reached blindly behind me and tightly grabbed the heavy oxygen tank from Eleanor's old dialysis setup.

With a sudden, massive surge of adrenaline, I hurled the metal cylinder directly at the large bedroom window.
The thick glass shattered outward completely with a tremendous, deafening crash that shook the walls.
